Nobody's Invisable Here

5-29-15
Buzzing. Sneakers on linoleum, lockers slamming, gossip. Class to class, who is with who, grades, fistfights, parties, lunch. The epitome of teenage existence. Disgusting. Stop. Pause. Take a closer look over there. The air seemed to shift. Watch those walls. You might catch her move.
She tightened her grip on the books she held against her chest. Her heels pressed against the wall, and her eyes darting from student to student passing through the hallways. She counts how many are wearing blue shirts today. Much more fun than her previous game of counting how many people wore purple. She shifted her weight, the air around her shimmered.
There. She moved. Did you see her? Shoot. Shoot. SHOOT. I cast the spell quickly, the magic flying from my fingertips. The black spider webs darted past the noses of the oblivious humans, standards who could not sense magic. The webs tangled themselves around her ankles, which I could now see clearly. Her invisibility spell dropped itself, reveling her small form. She was wrapped tightly in a brown coat, her green eyes and matching hair far too bright for her pale face.
She took a deep breath before peeling herself away from the wall and slipping through the gaps in the crowd. High school is much more bearable when you’re invisible. Again tightening her grip on the spell books against her chest, she stepped back against the wall at a much better observation spot.
Only a few more weeks and she will be safe. This is her cover, pose as a normal high school student, the council told her. You’ll be safe there. You must protect your powers if you wish to save us all. You must! The bug listened closely to the meeting, before hovering out of the vent and back home.
Fourteen. Fifteen. Sixteen. Cyan. Teal. Sky. She glanced at the ocean of hues. She sighed, this game was beginning to become as boring as the last. Only a few more weeks. Then she won’t have to waste her time here. She watched as another girl made her way down the hallway, thinking nothing of it, until the girl brushed up against her.
Her eyes widened, she gasped, quickly biting her lip to keep the yelp from escaping. She felt the painful burn of contact with human skin.
 “Sorry” the other girl mumbled.
“Wait” she exhaled, “you can see me?”.
“Yeah”, the girl shrugged, “Nobody’s invisible here”.
She stared as the girl shrugged and walked away. Her magic had fallen.
Panicking, she turned to look in the reflection of the glass window. Her eyes had changed, Instead of emeralds, she now stared into two black masses of obsidian. Black. Her books left her chest and hit the floor. She stared down at her arms, the black veins protruding from her pale skin growing ever darker with every heartbeat. Realization. Attack. The breath left her lips. The tear slipped, pulling the darkness from her eyes, marking her cheek like tar.
She thought she was safe. Hiding amongst the easily dismissible. It was the best place to be. And yet, it just wasn’t good enough. The mission is fulfilled. The grin graced my cheeks, filling itself in with the same black tar. The spider webs wove themselves over my eyes, taking me to the darkness. Peace. Finally. She stands, staring. The teenagers flow by. Beyond the grey walls of the high school, the rest of the world begins to go stale.
