Think twice

We're bouncing back
I never thought of that before
I've got a million quick responses
I could throw out at any point --
But I don't

I've been hoarding up all my defenses
Everyone says they are different
To my shame, I've found them the same
I'd welcome the change if it ever came --
But it doesn't
 
I need a solid surface
Some common ground would be nice
This spinning around is unnerving
My responses are making it worse
I thought the ride might be worth it this time --
But it's not

The water is getting colder
I tested it first, but I didn't think
The temperature change
Would be so distinct
Before I even submerged
I should learn to think twice --
But I haven't
