Together Daydream
The sun was shining ever bright
We sat alone just you and I
The sky was drifting
Cloudless blue above
And I heard you ask of me today
Why must I act in such a way?
Why must I put up
Barriers to your love?
“My child why do you run away
From the pain that seeps through yesterday?
Running away won’t bring you
Closer to the dawn
Why do you build your silly walls?
They won’t cushion you should you fall”
“Because the distant music calls me,”
I said, “I must be moving on.
“I build the walls to keep you out
To shield you from the pain and doubt
That comes behind the echoes
Of your softly spoken words
For someday when you are gone
Once again I’ll be alone
And I know I won’t regret
What I never heard
For sometimes words can turn to lies
Laughter into anguished cries
So I just prepare myself
To run
It’s better to look for something real
Than waste time on something I cannot feel
If the distant music calls me
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
But if you won’t tie your strings
If you will just wait for what love brings
Then maybe there’s a life
That we can share
So wait for my heart to see the light
The dawn that comes through morning bright
Someday I might
Admit to you I care.”
We sat alone just you and I
