In The Span of a Night

The shadows they move
with something to prove
Until the sun chases them away

In their wake lie roses
and their retreat exposes
the lonely unmarked graves

There is moss on the stones
which welcome ghosts home
after long and restless nights

They search for peace
and a final release,
a reading of their Last Rites

The long grass bends
against bitter winds
exhalations of forgone desires

The ravens bring gifts
as intentions of shrift
to reflect the hope of sun's fire
