Embers of the Day (edited 2 September 2015 )

Lengthening shadows
foretell the shortening day
climbing neighbours' walls
seeking out the garden sheds
clambering orchard trees
scrumping apples, darkened lawns,
gable ends of pretty bungalows
slip into the shade; doors tight shut.

On they go 'til all the town
is mute, and evening comes.
A blackbird basks on the gable top,
one last cry defies the night,
windows close and curtains drawn.
On the wall fresh shadows flicker,
fires fade to sleep as the dog
renews his vigil at my feet,
staring at the embers of the day.
