On Love And Gentrification
The Chicago river isn't beautiful but outdoor balconies are. People will give everything for river views.
Real estate investors call this "potential", a euphemism for making money; Green like nature.
"Potential" where others see industrial waste; Much like finding a spouse.
I could call you beautiful for wrong reasons
as in calling an outdoor balcony beautiful,
but the stench would still linger
and you'd hear it all the time.
There are only so many ways I can express it
before it becomes used up,
there are only so many ways you can hear it
before it becomes expected
like "cute" or "nice".

so either stop saying it, or find that really is beautiful.
i'm tripped up on this a bit. saying someone is beautiful is a compliment. are you giving compliments so that they will reciprocate with favors? and then eventually you know you will be found out...
or are you saying it because you mean it, but you are afraid it will become a meaningless and therefore will lose something that you really do find beautiful?

Its a word that can be used for shallow or superficial means. It can be used to overcompensate or cover up. Outer beauty is used to distract from inner or more holistic beauty or in some cases the truly ugly and insidious

Interesting view and I get the sentiment. It can become redundant for sure, but that's where the Romanticism comes into play and I'm sure the poet that you are you can pull that off without much effort. Though, I must admit I was a little lost going from "Much like finding a spouse." to the rest. Seemed slightly disconnected, but it could just be me of course...

I got the inspiration walking along the Chicago river, and all the over-priced condos reminded me of the way our society tries to transform beauty i.e transform the body instead of the person. Thank you for your insight
I see, I thought it was connecting to a person(s) also, or past experience. Which is why it felt disconnected a little. It makes more sense now...
