You Are Beautiful
The lightning in the sky
lit hot white just before midnight-
The clock struck and the flash was gone.
I thought I caught your glimpse along the facades...
...and then you called:
"Matt, can we talk?"
I said:
"You are beautiful, I'll be there soon"
and followed you through the pheromones and dim lights
on a radius from my heart through this city of ghosts,
breaking a promise I promised to never break
the moment I followed you through the threshold.
In the morning...I awoke to the sound of hissing radiators.
You were long gone leaving only a good-bye note
but I knew then
I would chase you through the pheromones and dim lights
picking up the pieces of my heart scattered in omens
all over Chicago's north side
all the way back to an empty room in a Portage Park flat,
with your good-bye letter in hand, and say:
"You are beautiful I am here now"
lit hot white just before midnight-
The clock struck and the flash was gone.
You were long gone leaving only a good-bye note
but I knew then
I would chase you through the pheromones and dim lights
picking up the pieces of my heart scattered in omens

all the way back to an empty room in a Portage Park flat,
with your good-bye letter in hand, and say:
"You are beautiful I am here now"
