The Christmas Rule
For eleven out of twelve months, I have a single rule.
Do not talk about Christmas before December.
Do not fret over gifts, wrapping paper and tinsel covered trees.
It irks me enough that the Christmas trees were on display near Halloween.
It’s a single rule that I hold close to my heart.
Do not talk about Christmas until the snow starts to fall.
Until the wreaths are hung up on the doors.
Until the Christmas music is the only music that plays.
Until our days are littered by Christmas cards in the mail, hot cocoa and snow days.
Do not mention Christmas.
Dare not speak it’s name.
Do not mention the lights, or the placement of our tree.
Just let the months roll by until December 1st.
And then roll out the gift wrapping and Christmas lists.
Let my old religion speak Christ’s name, praise that the Savior has been born.
My skeptic ways I shall hang on a shelf.
I will sing carols.
And dance around the chestnuts that forever shall roast.
Frosty and Rudolph will join in.
And Christmas will burn brightly in my heart.
And I will feel like a child again.
Writing lists and wrapping presents.
Decorating trees with tinsel and ornaments.
Saint Nicholas’ old soul will descend on our tiny home.
Grant the spirit of Christmas into our hearts and minds.
We will build a house of Gingerbread.
We will sings carols at the top of our lungs.
We will drink hot chocolate and eggnog.
But that is now, after December 1st.
An exciting Christmas Shopping adventure awaits.
Each other’s lists are our only maps.
With the help of the spirit and love of Christmas to serve as our sail and compass.
That is today, that is now.
After December 1st, when my one rule about Christmas is no longer in effect.
So please let Christmas stay in December.
Let it stay frozen in that one special part of our hearts.
Until the first snow fall then it shall thaw.
And all rules will fall away.
Christmas time will descend on us all.
For now it is Christmas time.
No more rules exist.
Right now, right here.
And so I say: "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
Do not talk about Christmas before December.
