For the Benefit of Others

Try as she may,
It just wouldn't go away.
She said it's here to stay.
If not prominent now, then another day.

He tried to save her,
And it nearly gave her
A reason to savor
The freedom that'd oft enslave her.

But who can compete with such a disease?
It won't simply flee after one heartfelt, "Please?"
Much more than a prison, much less than a tease--
Never is something one can appease.

She pledged to never again tell him,
So that from her life she'd never expel him.
Going forward, she'd just try to sell him
On the idea that he was helping, which would thus excel him.

She fought this battle quite alone
Because this behavior, if public, she would not condone.
Until her control in the fight was overthrown,
And the endless cycle was no more.
