Refusal

I'm sure you're most like me,
You've refused to be naïve.
The world's thrown stones at you alone,
But not knocked you off your feet.
You've refused to show you're weak.

I'm sure I'm most like you,
I've refused to be confused,
By those that chose to keep doors closed,
When I searched for something new.
I've refused and for that I grew.

But I'm sure they're most like us,
They've refused to always trust.
Their shell's grown hard to discard and guard,
Whilst their lives tried to adjust.
They've refused to break their crust.

And I'm sure we're most like them,
We've refused to be condemned.
We've refused to lose the tools that unglue,
The fools that might be friends,
In fear of refusal to not depend.

In fact, I'm sure we're all alike.
We've refused to just unite.
Their lives grew through wars most like mine, most like yours,
So refuse to be tense and uptight.
Refusal could cost us our lives.
