fatal

differently shaped
and differently sized
bottles and bags
lined on shelves
and stacked on tables.
the same pursuits
of prefered highs
each one having the
potential to be fatal.

you were fearless
and stayed fucked up
diminished if not dependent.
so kind you thought for it
to kick a nerve,
to swerve you right
when it really served you wrong
in the lack of reality's resplendence.

your friends and family meant something once.
you, yourself, and I meant something once.
you found freedom from all the shit
and kept almost everyone out of it
while you went in deep.
freedom so beautiful in a bind
you put up a front
which fooled so many:
now vacant and vandalized.

you were known as something once;
somewhere and someone good all at once
once upon a time.
you were known for something once
before submitting to your stalemate.
performing a stunt that would ultimately
be your last - managing to break
more than just bones
but also
your meaning, your memory,
yourself in two.

for however much you've taken in.
for however long cravings snaked in.
for however deep you drove the stake in:
I hope it was worth it.
