That It Always Seems To Be Wasted Time

The eight track player doesn't work, the Smith Corona doesn't work,
the internet may be down and doesn't respond, the 72 Malibu may not start
the gas fueled land mower may not start and the brain may not act right
but these annoyances have remedies; a little tinkering has them going
one thing is permanently dysfunctional and we all suffer
and its called the United States Congress
now this isn't overtly political for both parties share the blame
a devolution that is perpetuated for interests  
that have nothing to do with democracy
 
While growing up the two major parties had their differences  
easy to distinguish policy objectives and such
but you had liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats  
who could forge relationships that got things done
Nixon was one of the most paranoid men in the White House  
and yet the the EPA, and the a minimum wage act  
are just two of the legislative achievements of "Tricky Dick"
You had Republicans who joined with Democrats  
in supporting sanctions on Apartheid in South Africa
Democrats siding with Republicans to enact  
missile reduction with the Soviet Union
 
But now look at the state of affairs  
who can say they like what they see
efforts to impeach the president from day one,
the top Republican in the senate said his goal
was "to make Obama a one term president"
now failing in that move the same guy
is telling people the government may need to be shut down
now wait JUST A MINUTE!
your colleagues in the house are talking about suing the president
(a prologue to impeachment talk, round 2)
how do you sue the president if the government is closed?
Discord between the parties I am used to
but the elephants in the two chambers aren't on the same page  
why do you think budgets can't be agreed to on time  
and immigration reform goes nowhere?
 
So I say bring back the grown-ups to DC
robust debate and then GOVERN!  
the priority being the nation's well being
rather then the dictates of the party  
who now have more in common with lobbyists  
and fat cat donators then
the unemployed single mother  
a disabled veteran who can't get proper medical help
or the student sent to a school that is falling apart
 
This isn't about left, this isn't about the right
it is about doing the jobs
employment that not only influences domestic tranquility  
but also events far from the borders of the US  
that "beacon of light" right now doesn't shine so bright...
