forever ago

I fell in love when her
hesitation herniated through
the silence all around us

she peeled my orange wrong
the next morning and since
then,
I've been long gone

I could've written pirouettes
inside the checkerboard of freckles
weaving up and down her
body

I tried to find her rhyme scheme,
but the letters were a mess
off key and her bravado of
replacement left me begging to
confess

You see her happy, you see that dress and this is what it looks like when you're not there

she peeled my orange wrong
and I haven't eaten one
since
