I've never acquired the skill of picking good friends. Instead I've chosen fast ones. People that I can count on to be gone in a years time. People I don't have to worry about keeping in contact with.
I can always count on my friends to not pick up the phone when I need them. I can always count on my friends to not think to invite me. I can always count on my friends to let me drift off on my own and not question where I'm going.
These friendships provide me with the freedom to check out. I won't call you. I won't drunkenly text you some meaningless bullshit at three in the morning. I won't ask you to hang out.
I'll just be here watching HGTV alone in my apartment so when you call me I'll answer the phone. When you need me I'll be there.
