College student blues

     Some teachers want us to think
Philosophize lofty Ideals
Wonder about the meaning of life
     The human conditions
           Dissect The things we feel

Some teachers want debtors
     Who defend every idea
Logically
     With avarice
Until the classroom
                 
     Becomes a lively back
And forth
     A place to stretch the mind
An academic sport


Still, some teachers
Want a drone.
Who so quietly sit.
Absorbing
Lectures
Like pants absorbing
Sunlight through
Photosynthesis.


As a student
We must be all these things
     Philosopher
Debtor
     Drone

We must think great and lofty things
And passively imbibe
Ah! The things we must endure
To cultivate an educated mind!
