Won't Let Go

I wonder if you hold my in as high regard as I hold you.
The only harm you have caused me is petty, small
Not nightmare worthy or even scarring.
I think I'd rather be hurt by you than anyone else.
In all our love for each other, we have hit rough patches
Potholes of anger and distrust
We have crashed once,
Going our separate ways to leave the other to fate.
But you;
Your dark eyes have always reminded me of an animal
Some kind of beast that holds on for life to what it loves
That protects until it is so hurt its wounds never heal
You are just like me.
You want me safe like I want you happy
And I am desperate to see to it that you are fulfilled.
We hurt each other and left to lick our wounds
And I was unsure that they'd ever stop bleeding
Stop hurting as much as the day we got them
When I was stupid and left
And you were so hurt you didn't stop me.
It was your own desperation that kept us together
And even the miles between us wouldn't stop you
You wouldn't let me go
You wouldn't say it was really over
You couldn't comprehend it.
We pushed and shoved each other into submission
Until I came back
Near dead and numb to your affection
And any hurt there was left in me.
You nursed me back to health with love and acceptance
And now maybe
Just maybe
We can be like we used to be
Where every song we heard was about us
And every love story paled in comparison to our own
I hope
Goddess I hope
We can be.
