A Knight in Tarnished Armor - Part 1
I defeated dragons and even demons.
I rescued whole villages.
My hands quarried stone for mighty keeps.
Minstrels in neighboring kingdoms still sing of my deeds.
I was fearless!
I was bold!
I was powerful!
A proud Knight of the Realm.
You are pure and righteous,
Delicate and refined.
How can I leave you
At the mercy of the harsh world?
Afraid to lose you,
Afraid we’ll perish,
Now barely conquering table manners after a fitful sleep.
A Page waiting for promotion to Squire.
I rescued a damsel in distress
And bold action saved you from harm.
Now it seems only staged jousts
Can keep you safe.
I yearn for a quest once more.
I am told I am still a knight,
But you fear my foolhardy notions
And your protective protestations keep me harmless.
Ah! But the Quest is in my blood!
I am a Knight!
I needn’t vanquish Red Dragons,
But it is requisite I pursue them.
If I find myself again
Will you love me once more?
Will you welcome me back from the Quest (or accompany me!)
Or scorn me as you do for acting a Page?
Your days are filled by obligation and there is no time for the superfluous.
When I am not jousting, your duties keep you from me.
The treasures we’ve won are allocated to selfless needs
And there are only lead candelabras by which to see.
But I witness miracles
Each time your solitary desires are fulfilled:
Time springs forth from grain and lead is transmuted into gold!
I see now that selfless desires are supported by Creation itself.
