Conversation with a nihilist
-I'm a nihilist and everything I do, is deliberately done without purpose.
-Ok, but if you are hungry you go get something to eat, don't you? How can that be without purpose?
-Ah, but you see... I know that I don't have to do anything and that every action is ultimately equally meaningless. So that I go get a burger or something, is more like a random event than a purposeful act.
-I think you are fooling yourself. You eat because you are hungry. To sate your hunger is a purpose.
-Not really. Hunger is just a sensation in my body. If I want to I can ignore it. The consequences of not eating at all will be that I die. Either way it doesn't matter because I know I don't have to do anything. So I'm free.
-Perhaps. But you choose to do something or the other, based on preferences. You prefer eating and living, to starving and dying. If all actions are meaningless, you could stop eating right now.
-No.
-Why not?
-It would serve no purpose to do that.
