The Death of Sniper Wolf
Based on events from the game Metal Gear Solid.
I walked through the electronic slide doors, to a white covered field and a massive blizzard, I tightly gripped the handle of my sniper rifle. As the doors slammed shut behind me I knew I was in for whatever ride was coming my way. As I took two steps, my feet crunching the settled snow, I heard a loud bang that echoed through the field, I ducked and slid to cover next to a tree, leaving my rifle on the ground...in the open. I looked up to see that the panel on the door had been shot, destroying any chance of the door opening, and also destroying any chance of me escaping. I pushed into my ear and contacted my tech support, Otacon.
"Otacon! Someone is shooting at me, in the middle of this blizzard!"
He gasped.
"Its her!" he spoke in a gleeful tone
"Wolf? Sniper Wolf?!"
"Yes its her, its definately her!" he replied, again in that gleeful tone
"Otacon" I paused "You sound like your happy"
"No...Im not, its just..."
I sighed.
"Snake, please dont hurt her!" he begged,
"What? Are you insane, shes trying to kill me!" I snarled
"Snake, shes not a bad person, honestly!"
"Otacon, I dont have time for this, if I dont stop Metal Gear, then we're all going to be sitting ducks!"
"Snake...please, Wait!"
I took my hand off my ear and ended the codec call. Now I had to get my rifle back somehow.
I had no choice but to make a run for it. I stood up, took a deep breath and legged it toward my rifle. Every step I took, two bullets hit the ground just inches away from me. I then stood on top of my rifle, but I stood still, because I saw the red laser beam from her rifle slowly travel up my body, and then toward my head. At that point I ducked my head and upper body foward, dodging the bullet, while kicking my right leg back at the same time, knocking my rifle back a few meters. I then back flipped, grabbed my rifle as my hands hit the floor, threw my body back onto my legs, span around once, dodging the first bullet, span again dodging the second bullet, quickly stood into position, aimed my rifle as myself and Sniper Wolf fired at the same time.
Her bullet grazed my arm a little, but my bullet hit her directly in the chest. She dropped her rifle, fell to the ground and attempted to crawl away but failed after a few meters. I walked the field before eventually arriving at her injured body.
"I...I am a sniper, waiting is my job, never moving a muscle. I have been waiting for this moment." She said, so elegantly, so softly. She then began to spit up a small amount of blood.
"I am lung shot, there is no surviving this. I know this is my time. Please, just finish me quick."
"What makes you think I'm going to do that?" I asked, kneeling beside her.
"I am a Kurd, I have always dreamed of a peaceful place like this. The snow, the wolves and the silence." She said, gazing at the snow covered trees, the white field, and the small wolf cub who came over at sat a few meters away from us.
"A Kurd? So thats why your called Wolf"
She sighed at me gently.
"I was born on the battlefield, rised from childhood on the battlefield. Gunfire, sirens and screams, they were my lullibies." A tear formed and rolled out of her eye and down her cheek
"Everyday I would wake up to find a few more of my family or friends dead beside me. We were hunted like dogs, always driven from our shelters, sometimes I would stare at the morning sun and pray to make it through the day. This was my life. Our government and governments around the world turned a blind eyes and deaf ears to our misery."
I took out her tissue she had given me before and whiped the blood from her mouth and the tear from her eye.
"But then, oh then, he appeared, my hero Salidin. He took me away from all that."
"Salidin" I gasped "Big Boss..."
"I become a sniper" she continued, as wolf howls echoed from the distant "I became a sniper, watching the stupidity of humanity through the scope of my rifle. I then saw war from the outside. As an observer."
We both paused.
"I wanted revenge on the world that had killed my family and friends...against the governments that could of stopped it all. So I joined this group of revolutionaries. But, in doing so, I have shamed myself, and my people. Im no wolf anymore. Im nothing more than a dog." She spoke, tears running down her cheek.
"Wolves are noble animals, in Yupik the word for Wolf is Kegluneq and the Aluets honoured, loved and though of them as cousins, nothing like dogs. We're all for sale at some cost, so people like me are called mercinaries like us dogs of war. But not you, your solitary, untouched by the burden of greed and money. Your no dog. You, are a wolf."
She looked at me, and I could tell by the lost look in her eyes that her time was getting shorter.
"Who are you...Are you him? Salidin?"
"Wolf, back at the Com Towers. You spared Meryl's life. Why?"
"Even as an onlooker of war, I dont want women, or children to get hurt."
I smiled at her friendly.
"Rest easy, you will die, in this place of peace, as the proud wolf you are."
She then looks at me, eyes widen.
"I finally understand now, I wasnt waiting because it was my job, waiting to kill people, I was actually waiting for someone to kill me, people like you, your a hero. Please, set me free."
I stood up straight and drew my handgun.
The small cub looked behind himself and snarled a little. Out of nowhere Otacon appeared.
"Why? Why..." Otacon cried, tears running down his face. "I loved you..."
Wolf stretched her arm toward Otacon.
"What...what is it?" he asked sniffling
"My gun, give her to me...please" she asked, to which Otacon quickly ran to the gun grabbed it, ran to Wolf and placed it on her body as wolves started to gather all around.
She looked around. At me, at Otacon, the gathering wolves and at the small wolf cub who gave out a short whimper.
"Everyone is here now." she sighed happily.
"Ok hero, set me free" her last words.
I raised my handgun, cocked the hammer back, and took a deep pause.
I then pulled the trigger. The bang of the gun echoed through the valley, as all the wolves surrounding us let out howls and whimpers, which also echoed in the crystal gray and snow white sky.
Faintly the words 'Set me free' whispered in the wind, then it was all over.
