The Trick

The only thing worse than hatred is indifference.
Being ignored is the final insult.
The un-returned call or email is the international sign for 'goodbye.'
I feel indifference coming from unexpected places lately.
Change is sweeping my corner of the world
And we are all going through something.
I've lived long enough to know people come and go
As do scenes, bands, women, drinks, drugs, and amplifiers.
The trick is to enjoy them all for what they are, then let go.
Surfing the flow is the only sane choice.
Attaching to one way or world view breeds despair.
The trick is to continually make the best
Of what is presented.

The adventure continues as long as you let it.
You can ride the beast for all its worth every day
Or you can dig in your heels and try to keep things the same.
The trick is to be OK with change.
The trick is to be the most adaptable.
The trick is to know it is coming.

New alliances will replace the distant ones soon enough,
As always.
The game continues and gets better.
Means more.
Craft and creativity run hand in hand.
Nowhere close to over.
The trick is to get to this part.
To live long enough, body and spirit,
To finally get what youth wouldn't let you comprehend.

I will miss those who don't hang around,
But will not mourn.
I know that this is the way of things.
The trick is to be excited about what's coming,
Even if you don't know what it is yet.
Anything other way of thinking is the path to old age.
The trick is to never stop.
The trick is to remain pure.
The trick is to live until death.

I have already flirted with the feeling of age.
I don't like it.
Fuck that.
Forward is the only way.
The game is life, life is the game.
Without a game, you die.
Without a game, purpose dies.
I am here to create, to shout,
To make loud noises in the night time.
That is how I make life.
It took a long time, but I realized the game is me.
I gotta play it.
That's the trick.
