“No mere mortal can escape this place” The beast said
I swallowed hard. “A-am I in hell? Is this what hell looks like?”
All three of the beasts’ heads perked up and the middle one gave off a sinister grin.
“Hell?” he asked with a smile still on his face. “What’s that?”
Beginning to feel uneasy I backed away, well aware that my chances of escape were slim to none.
All three of the beasts’ heads were staring at me now. “Do we frighten you?” They all asked in a synchronized voice.
The middle heads eyes became a blue flame and the right head eyes became yellow while the lefts stayed red.
An almost beautiful sight it was. The silver fur on its back stood up.
“No’ I replied in a very unconvincing voice.
“LIAR!” it howled and in that instant the sky lit up
As the beast exploded into an inferno of fire and everything around it incinerated
I watched as the grass and trees turned to dust and disappeared
As the fire reached me, I closed my eyes screaming as it engulfed me and burned everything from my body.
My eyes closing to see a beautiful meadow in the sunlight
I opened them a second later to see everything the way it was and the beast staring at me
A sinister grin on its face again
Little cinders falling upwards around like snow
The smell of burnt wood filling the air
I was gasping to breathe after such a scare
Wondering why this beast was toying with me
What meadow did I see when my eyes closed for that split second….
The beast slowly walked into the grass
But turned around just as it entered and recited something to me
“When the winds blow through the night
And you feel a tingling through thou
Thine losses have come in plight
The monsters skulk most foul
We live in the shadows of everyday
Fathers of the pain
We are the reason you pray
Hungry to return to the rain”
And with that he returned to the shadows
His words embedded in my head
I had no idea what the creature meant
But these things I see were apparently nothing new
I stood staring straight ahead for a long time after
Scared to move for what other things I may see
I was half way to the shining library at this point though
So I decided to walk slowly, disoriented as I passed through the falling cinder
Slowly dissolving to the shadows with a wisp of smoke
To the left I could see from the corners of my eye
I could see a man being attacked by a pack of shadowy dogs
Flailing on the ground as one of the dogs turned to look at me
Its eyes glowing red like rising mist from its eye sockets
All at once everything felt cold
The dog still staring at me
Watching as my breath gasped into me
The steam rising from my nostrils and chilling my very soul
If I still possessed such a thing as a soul or they even existed…
I broke my gaze from the attacking dogs finally and continued walking down the path
Every once in a while hearing a whooshing sound in the skies above
Glancing up every so often to try to make out anything, this bird like sound feeling very familiar to me
Only seeing the dark sky and the face, the sun and the moon, holding it’s place
The steam of my breath still escaping every couple seconds like ghosts escaping
I could see I was quite close to the library at this point; I could make out a table in the middle with a candle
I started to pick up my pace, walking faster and almost immediately being halted
A tall woman like shadow stood in my way holding the hand of a small child like figure
I stopped frozen, the shadows just stood there staring at me
My heart rate raising again, the wisps of breath coming from my lips increasing
The small child shadow held its hand out to me; I looked at it for a long time
Scared of what might happen if so much as touched it; scared if I didn’t
After a long while I finally reached out and touched the child’s hand
As soon as our fingers touched, white and black, a mixing of worlds
My vision shot from my own and I was standing in a village at dawn
The tiniest fragment of light coming into the sky
Fields and trees lined the outskirts of the small village
I was holding my child’s hand and getting ready to run
I could hear screaming in the distance and gun fire
I ran forward yanking my child’s arm to come with me
As we ran to a ditch with grass lining it
Laying down in it I told my daughter to climb onto my back
As we began to crawl, hard to see anything around as the sun had not broken the horizon yet
Crawling forward, need to get out of here, the men came and are taking everything
Killing everyone, we thought they had come to help us but we were wrong
I heard footsteps and in an instant my daughter screamed
I rolled over to see a man in green grabbing my daughter
As I screamed her name another hit me knocking me out
I woke up lying on the ground, looking up to see my daughter crying
A pile of villagers bodies all dead laying off to the side
She said four words, “Mommy, I love you” before they shot her in front of me
Her blood going into my eyes and over me, her limp body falling in front of me
Crying tears of her blood, unable to move from my position on all fours
They tossed the very gun they used to shoot her down in front of me
And tossed one bullet off to the side and just walked away laughing
The birds flew from the trees taking me with them as the gun shot echoed the heavens
My vision shooting back to me standing in front of them
Tears falling upwards to whatever was above me
Falling upwards with that girls blood still in them
For a second there was a smile on the shadows face and they vanished
And I hated this place as much as I slowly became to hate my own world
