Pensioners' Villanelle
To become more exciting for you,
I had the care worker and a Jehovah's witness.
Novelties in this life are very few.
Mine was a traffic warden and dustman,
Then, playing away, a spicy countess.
To become more exciting for you.
In the ladies' loo then having a tan.
Coming down the helter skelter no less.
Novelties in this life are very few.
Having an enema and on the scan.
During a parachute jump in full harness
To become more exciting for you.
Full speed on a motor bike, stuff the ban.
With a prison warder in party dress
Novelties in this life are very few.
Let's take a gentle walk while we still can.
Should not cause us overwhelming distress
To become more exciting for you

You made me learn a new term with this poem - villanelle...thank you...
Oh but this was good...the golden years are not so golden...they are appallingly boring but busy with doctors appointments, home health care workers, having an enema....this was so funny and so true....

A villanelle (also known as villanesque)[1] is a nineteen-line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately until the last stanza, which includes both repeated lines. The villanelle is an example of a fixed verse form. The word derives from Latin, then Italian, and is related to the initial subject of the form being the pastoral.

Many thank Kitty. It is the first time I have tried this form. I thought it might sound too repetitive but James Joyce, Dylan Thomas and, apparently, Sylvia Plath all used it though I have not found her example. I rationalised it might suit this theme when the old themselves are believed to repeat themselves over and over again. And my excuse for gently mocking the old is that I am old myslef.

Marthard this is honestly exciting! I truly love it .. I did learn from the off. Googled villanesque and my head spin. Lol. So many guidelines. But as I read your piece it came to light (I actually got it! ) lol.
I love this style as it opens the mind by reverting back to a previous statement . The completion lines made me think of the joy of shopping (gosh a I have a girlie gene after all) it made me think of remembering the little black dress and dashing back for its poignant symbolism)
The too's and fro's by the completion lines brought this to life in a way no other style has ( for me anyhoos )
I do hope you get what on earth I'm struggling to express. I know what I mean . Just call me flounder :)

Many thanks for your kind comment Syn. I am a sucker for different forms of verse (I think because my first pieces were all Shakespearean sonnets). Usually the villanelle was used for expressions of pain and loss (as did Dylan Thomas and Sylvia Plath) but James Joyce in 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' gave it a slightly comic touch so I thought I could do the same.
