Fossil
The axe
must have fallen silently
cutting the umbilical
chord to the elite
then the free verse army
came marauding
noisily slitting throats
while the whores of rhyme
snapped their legs
together tight
until antique poetry
turned belly up
and died
with not even a fight
It wasn't headlines
but one day
new poetry got drunk
shot itself in the foot
and now it hops up and down
on the internet
faking mortal wounds
writhing from the pain
of an imaginary bullet
through the guts
But who are we kidding
'cause if any fool can write
then poetry's a fossil
we already buried
to languish deeper
than the ghost of its own
stale dust
