People whine
about writer's block
but no-one mentions the shits.
That's when a poet
can't stop writing
although she's tired
& hungry at 4 am
ideas fighting
to break out of her head
eyes burning
& thoughts busting a gut
driven to be free of frantic fingers
dragging her roughly
from her bed.
No-one mentions
being stuck in poet mode
24/7,
in the shower,
on the bus,
at the store--
even wiping her ass after a crap
churning every frame of her life
into one more line too good to let go
that killer phrase to remember
morphed to another gritty edit chore.
No-one mentions
the pain of word choice
ten nails agonised
& bitten to the quick.
Maybe the government
should put out a health warning:
Too much poetry
makes you sick.
So please,
if you're reading this
take heed:
When writing poems,
although your motives may seem pure
remember poetry
is a disease
that can be fatal
& there's no
known
cure.

I only wish I had this originality. Your metaphors are endless, Abra. I read a lot of poetry, but mostly from here, and my head has a hell of a time putting anything I feel into worthy words... I only dream about comprehending specific structure and what works in phrase when I'm writing. My frustration abounds, and there better be a fucking cure or God sakes, Man, I'm doomed to a life of shit production! And *you'll* have to sift through it in your wanderings!

Luckily this sight binds us but there are others that don't and it is just like word vomit. I love your descriptions and style. It's a wonderful topic and you express it with the gravity it needs. It's lovely. :)

i can defiantly relate to the writing shits..there are just some times that the world seems to make more sense on paper, yet the constant demand for creation can certainly be very tiring!

It's wonderful to hear through someones words how I feel every day. Writing is hell, I tell people all the time, they just don't get it. Here's to you, and your great poem! I especially love this part:

Wonderful piece of writing; you express the overload of ideas and words beautifully and with great humor and pathos invoking the seriousness of it and the danger and suffocation of it too. Yet it is so lighthearted and life-abounding. Yes, when this happens, it can make you nuts as if you're on a drug and then when it is over or passes temporarily you wish you had it again. This is a thumbs up poem. How do I indicate thumbs up on this site?
