The AA man
Pentremeurig Road, Carmarthen,
above the town and Lammas street
the College a top the hill
the pub down Job's-Well Road.
My first job, ready to save the world.
It was a sleepy town most days
Saturdays, quite different,
buses left before closing time,
Lammas Street awash with beer.
I learned to drive there taught
by the AA man . . . cash in hand.
He knew the test route backwards
followed the examiners each day !
every angle, every street they used.
They complained, he took no notice.
We passed, my wife and I, first time
Trafalgar Square the next.
Round and round we went, thinking
of Lammas street and the AA man,
his yellow bike and cash in hand.
