Something Changes
But then the wind had
changed a light appeared
she was caught in some kind
of magic suddenly she was
overflowing with the schemes
riches of mania her heart was
pumping so vigorously she thought
an event was about to occur though
suddenly ecstatic she retained enough
presence of presence to attempt to
determine why her emotions were upside
down the reverse of a few moments ago:
even the city seemed to have no middle
ground certainly the poor were poor and
the rich were rich but wealthy women in
sables with their diamonds on were sifting
through garbage cans the poorest of the
poor who slept above subway gratings strutted
down the street speaking furiously about
monetary policy and the Federal Reserve: she
saw great numbers of men who were women and
women who were men: there was not even a
bank in which to deposit her check.
