Image for the poem november family

november family

all asleep, in this field, under trees and grey stone
your red drums now're silent, now quiet, alone
and you slumber, in peace, far away from your home
with your sisters and brothers now deep in the loam

with soft faces of youth and each with a name
when the need was most dire, by the millions you came
from our farms and our cities across this great land
that you swore to defend, as you each raised your hand

and you shouldered that burden, for all of us, me
all my brothers and sisters, my brave family
and with honor you served til that day soaked in red
with the courage of lions your last drops were bled

so each year in November my thoughts go to you
and the ultimate proof of your loyalty true
as you joined in the ranks of our long honored dead
and I give solemn thanks as I lift up my head

with my heart beating free from your blood that was spilled
I can no longer see with my eyes over filled
the cerulean sky in the heavens above
overwhelmed by your gift, your last measure of love
