Remembering Us

If I am to be remembered for anything,
I’d prefer to exist within the memories
You consider to be your fondest
Like those late night confessions or our
     [ First kiss ]
Every second wasted with you was time,
Well spent.
Re-read each poem I wrote to you,
Read it as if it were my voice instead
Every line about you, every stanza written
Back when this love was brand new
Before the end, before you left again
Before all of our days were spent
Crying over bloody shirt sleeves and
Saying things we never meant,
Things that I still regret.
Remember parking lots, etch-a-sketches and
Plenty of meth filled syringes
Remember before things got bad,
Before we began existing at the
Bottom of all these tiny bags.
Don’t bother re-living all we regret
But can never take back..
Read the words I stayed up late writing,
Everything I felt but couldn’t say
Each line was written with you in mind
While I remembered nights when
Your body laid so close to mine,
When I could hear your heartbeat
And feel your breath on my spine.
