The End of Civilization
They met
at the usual spot.
She slipped off
her shoes.
He placed his boots
near the bed.
Her dress and stockings
fell to the floor.
His uniform, unbuckled,
was folded on the chair.
Her necklace and rings
were placed on the nightstand.
His watch and wallet
balanced on the clock radio.
She put aside her political agenda
and dismantled her religion.
He disrobed his preconceptions
and let go of his dogmas.
Her affiliations and affirmations
were tossed to the basket.
His education and awards
were checked at the door.
Her gender, and size, and
all of her assumptions were vaporized.
He smothered and burned the last
vestiges of his cultural acclimations.
Once class, age, and dialectical insecurities
were disbanded, they melded into each other's arms.
They became one, neither male nor female,
and they belonged to no country.
In this uncivilized way,
they were able to communicate openly.
And they never spoke
another word.
