POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
My goal: be worthy of the attentive ear and open mind
A House With Unlocked Doors
Head bowed, there is a piecing light of strength
offered to those
who stand by the fires of Grief
and gently
tend them.
A weariness descends,
the last embers
scarcely flicker,
evoking the raging flame
of feeling
that came before.
Once there is nothing left
to give,
the gateway to receiving
appears.
The fires ask to be fed
the final offering.
Bathed in ceremonial light
cast just the right way,
to make a long forgotten memory
feel new again,
what is...

and gently

Come In
surrender
who you thought
was knocking at your door.
karma brings
more than one type
of gift,
and they aren't always perfectly wrapped
or properly labelled.
you might have been waiting
for a suitor
to come around
asking your name,
but instead
you found someone insufferable
lacking symmetry or
grace.
how much can we learn
if we only court
the pieces of life that burst
into radiance?
if the world was simply dazzling
we'd have little work to do.

Part I
The Receiver
*****************
Being a receiver
is easier than
being a giver.
When the world is properly understood
everything comes in the right direction.
It is impossible to think that
I shouldn't simply sit back and enjoy.
I am surrounded by stellar abundance.
I am humbled by the fact that
most of us are meant to be ordinary,
there is something extraordinary when you unwind these facts.
I am engulfed by passion ...

Would You Stay?
sinking toes into mud
explanatory
in itself, mysteriously matching
interior and exterior sensation.
the earth swallows swatches
of skin and pale guilt
slumps into muddied pride.
returning to truth
while still hovering
slightly above it.
knees possesed by prayful position
without thought
of clarity or request.
longing
the pine needle pinches
(a sensation endured
by the living) while dead detritus gives the last of its purpose to this strange
creature looking to feel something new.

I Caught A Glimpse Out My Window
while one is bustling away, frantically
pursuing
the inner most journey
to pupose
and clarity
don't forget
to look out,
to catch twilights pummeled
in pastels, patiently
passing evolving
and withering into darkness
it doesn't need
your acknowledgment or
the approval
we seek so desperately
in everything
else,
but if we never cease
(even briefly) our belief
that what is common
is somehow
less extraordinary,
sunset
and sun rise ...

My Thesis on Pokemon Go
I want to start this conversation by saying my reflections on Pokemon Go are neither endorsing nor condemning the game itself. What I am most interested in are the broader social, cultural, and ethical implications that this movement has highlighted for me.
First of all, I have just referred to this game as a movement, and indeed it is. There have been many movements in the twentieth century; Pro Life, Occupy Wall Street, Veganism and Black Lives Matter to name a few. But I would be so bold as to say that none of these movements,(or any other movement I can think of) were able to...

Vanilla
i am the type of person who believes you can’t know your favourite flavour until you have tried them all. despite this fact, as a young child voraciously seeking and discovering new tastes, my go to flavour was always vanilla. smooth sweet soft vanilla. but my appetite for new tastes was strong and i kept on tasting as the world seemed to invent new combinations as quickly as i tried the last.
after a time, somewhere in between pre-pubescence and awkward adolescence, ice cream gave way to Love. i was still very hungry. but what i now craved were the intricate intimacies of another...

Everything That Makes Me Angry
Everything That Makes Me Angry
The lack of emotional intelligence taught in school * that liking children is not a prerequisite to teaching * that people don’t understand teaching and parenthood are the two most radically important jobs in the world * that parenthood can be entered into by mistake* that children could ever feel like a mistake*the fact that our culture perseverates on our collective and individual mistakes but not on how to solve them* that people think the world needs fixing* that I think the world needs fixing* that we aren’t currently capable of enjoying where we...

We Never Talk About It
i don’t remember exactly what form it took. could have been a facebook post or a result of some random clicking, but I do recall (very clearly) the impact it had on me. there has been a shift towards campaigns that acknowledge mental health (and illness) and the intended result is to destigmatize this illness and to empower people to realize it is ok (and necessary) to reach out for help. basically this notice that I saw said that depression is a form of brain damage and this hit me like a load of bricks. brain damage. ouch.
i had heard the analogy that if you broke your arm you...

Bodily Bliss
You cannot imagine the height of my surprise or the depth of my laughter the day I realized I was not a brain floating through space. Call it the fault of North America conditioning, modern education systems, or our scientifically focused society, but I spent most of my life believing that improving and refining my intellectual capacity was the main reason for my existence.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my brain and all the crazy wild things we have thought together. But somewhere in my early twenties I began to notice a quiet whisper vying for attention over the booming authority of my...

love letters to myself
i am searching for you in my past. in all the lives that only glimpse themselves, mere rubbings aside a wasteland of moot points and my current breath. for life times we have traveled. in and out of vessels, vexing and varied, veracious and vital, it was not these casings that caused our Being but our being in them that caused us to forget. it has taken eons to meet you. to hold on to who you are in any meaningful way. and as consciousness breaks it bevels upon unbearable to conceive of any future hours without that knowledge on my breath. you are who i am and what i am. you are the...

why Art?
art has an important role in our society, and one of it’s most important traits is that barely anyone can understand why. this is not an elitist principle. it requires no formal arts education to understand it better. what it does require is a simple realization. this realization come to many people in many different ways. some people make this discovery by writing or drawing or dancing. some people through being a misfit or from being angry at the world. others are inspired by people who have seen the world for what it is, and passionately show that they can see it too. this simple...
