Lightning Bug
Lightning bug
Trapped
Between my window and screen
Bound by wire and glass
You signal with your lantern
For assistance from your kin
I watch you flicker violently
As I fall asleep
Your lighthouse body
Your beacon to the night
In the morning
I wake to find you at the bottom of the pane
Dry
Dark
Lifeless
Your friends weren’t there
Trapped

Blue Moon
Rising over the trees
swallowing us
Drunk with satisfaction
Drunk with friends
Is the blue moon you pointed out to me
Before I went to sleep
Before I ripped my jeans
Before I took a drink
And smoked my last cigarette
Blazing through the heavens
Casting sapphire shadows
Along the truck beds
And beer cans
watching our hick-town dance
swallowing us
Drunk with satisfaction
Drunk with friends

Footnotes
I used to write about you.
I used to paint your face with
Words and prose.
Symbolism and Metaphor were our children
And between the lines of a page -
Our home.
We layed safely among penmarks.
Later, you’d walk out of my chapters
Leaving scribbles and footnotes.
You left your pen behind.
I still use it and in writing
I’m closer to you.
