POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
In my spare time I have been known to end pointless threads with a quick kill. And rarer than that is when I write poetry.
Arms for Arms - NaPoWriMo2023 #26
There is a phantasm sense
of power
in my arm today.
As though I should be
holding the hilt
of something,
or grasping a shield,
or that there is
a sheathed talon upon my hand.
It is a curious feeling
that refuses to flee
if I flex my fingers.
The ghost of
ancestral battles maybe?
Or a premonition
of growing strength?
My limb feels untested,
rather than unsettled
of power
in my arm today.
As though I should be
holding the hilt
of something,
or grasping a shield,
or that there is
a sheathed talon upon my hand.
It is a curious feeling
that refuses to flee
if I flex my fingers.
The ghost of
ancestral battles maybe?
Or a premonition
of growing strength?
My limb feels untested,
rather than unsettled

Cogita Camera Obscura - NaPoWriMo2023 #25
When I close my eyes
I can see a kaleidoscope
of buzzing, swirling
pinpricks in white and colour
against a black backdrop.
If I follow those trails,
they will lead me
to where my mind wanders,
to the true essence of myself;
A daydreamer,
Who could while away the hours
watching things playing out,
because boredom is just so overrated.

Diary - NaPoWriMo2023 #24
I did have a plan
for my day off;
waking round midday
and an afternoon
mostly spent painting
elegant wargaming miniatures.
Though fate
thought otherwise;
no rest for the wicked -
an earlier than liked start
to help lug and fill up
salt in the water softener.
With a dash of salty irritation
at being
underestimated in my strength,
and due to
having been awake up until 5am.
A sub-par nap and some shut eye,
and some free time,
before helping move video tapes
and stuff on shelves. ...

It is the little things - NaPoWriMo2023 #23
Something has to be said
about the incredible satisfaction
or a good toothbrush.
Such little things
are what makes life good,
not just bearable,
when things seem to be going
to hell in a handcart
downhill with rocket boosters.
It is my firm belief
that it is the little things,
the little points,
that create a nexus
upon life, the universe and everything,
enough to swings things
the way of good,
all things considered.
Because lightning
is all showy and amazing, ...
about the incredible satisfaction
or a good toothbrush.

The little hedge-people - NaPoWriMo2023 #22
Sometimes I look
at hedge rows,
and imagine
The little kingdoms
nestled below the sticks and leaves,
concealed in the foliage.
The would be Courts
of grass and daises
bordered by walls
of towering trees,
sometimes disturbed
by inquisitive cats
or perched on by passing birds.
A realm where life
is on the small scale,
secreted amongst shrubbery,
in their green and verdant
pleasant land.

Time travel is but like turning a page - NaPoWriMo2023 #21
I have found that
I can time travel.
I don't need
a police phone box;
the doctor is Who
is their name.
Or a DeLorean;
with capacity for flux
and other changes.
Or a phone box;
totally excellent
in its normality.
I only need a book
to be able to time travel.
When engrossed within those leaves
time moves by a thousand acres,
as I am transported
to another plane,
while the mind's eye
plays out pictures
summoned by words.

Flat soda - NaPoWriMo2023 #20
Ever had one of those days
that fails to live up to expectations?
Not a tone of death or disaster;
but merely disappointment,
summed up as
flat soda
and
lukewarm coffee
of life's buffet.
Again, not all that bad
all things considered;
such as abject poverty
or war-torn exile.
Yet enough to be an
inconvenience,
knowing you should be happy
for all the other blessings,
but today was just sub-par
at least its over now.

Clock-watching - NaPoWriMo2023 #19
The clock
on the window ledge
is dragging its hand again;
each second
and subsequent second
is longer than the last,
as it batters the breathe
out of its batteries.
And I ponder
and reflect on this,
turning forwards the hands
to check how far
time slips when not watched.
Awaiting the results
of the tests
to see how faulty it is,
and make replacements;
knowing in the back of my mind
you cannot simply
replace people;
cherish the moments still left.

Still waiting for the next Isambard Kingdom Brunel... - NaPoWriMo2023 #18
Although I am British
and queueing is as natural
as feathers to a duck
and rain on a bank holiday,
there are still limits
to patience.
Or rather,
I
specifically
find long queues
with short staffing numbers
an
irritating combination;
another sign
of declined values,
suffused by the fugue
of apathetic that'll-do.
Bloody Hell,
we used to invent things
and build bridges
and exploit the earth,
not just waste time clicking pictures.

Human Flaws - NaPoWriMo2023 #17
Machines for all their wonder,
for all their worth,
have little defence
against
natural bundled bumbling.
For the machine
is Order,
and Order is logical.
But the spirit
can conjure quirks
to off-balance
the ghost in the machine,
and apply
an unseen poke
to applications.
Errors and failings
that no code of conduct covers;
the unexplained touch
of human
ignorant to innate
anti-technology intentions.
Magic is human after all.
for all their worth,
have little defence
against
natural bundled bumbling.
For the machine
is Order,
and Order is logical.
But the spirit

to off-balance
the ghost in the machine,

Composed - NaPoWriMo2023 #16
Stumbling across a new song,
well,
new to me at least,
fresh treasure
for the soul's vault.
Reverberations
that echo as a
now satisfied need;
a filled hole
that I did not know
was there
until the sounds overwrote
the silence
- placed puzzle pieces
to a jigsaw behind your head.
It does not matter when
it was found
that is all that matters.
well,
new to me at least,
fresh treasure
for the soul's vault.
Reverberations
that echo as a
now satisfied need;
a filled hole
that I did not know
was there
until the sounds overwrote
the silence

that is all that matters.

Unintended chaos - NaPoWriMo2023 #15
What day is it?
What's the poem?
These questions and more
right after this
line break.
I dreamt of a phrase
and in my dreams
noted it down,
only to awake
with faded inspiration
and ghosts of words unwritten.
And now I scramble
to sort out submissions
writing a list
and checking it twice;
maddened and flustered
with the flurry of cross-checking.
Chaos has a way of finding me
not that I try to run and hide;
like tripping
down
stairs
into an
underground brawl.
