Chromosomes
Chromosomes
When I was a child
they told me you
were an intelligent man
but not kind
and that our eyes are the same.
In time I grew to fear my hands
would also become like yours:
harsh against those
that I was only ever meant
to be gentle with.
I grew and waited
to see if it would be
nature or nurture
that would decide
who i would become.
But realization came with
the knowledge that while
I am one part you
and also one part her,
I am only me.
I am not my genetics
and I am not...

Promises
Will you promise me something?
It's not an easy promise but..
I promised it once
and it'd mean the world to me
if you promised it too.
Promise me
That when you feel alone
You will remember
The way laughter makes you feel
and how sweet a smile tastes.
Promise me
That in the dark hours
when your thoughts run rampant
that you will pick up your pen
and stain paper black, not red.
Promise me
That if you think
the world has turned it's back on you
that you will remember
the way the moon and stars adore...
It's not an easy promise but..
I promised it once
and it'd mean the world to me
if you promised it too.

Past Familiarity Between Strangers
To be quite frank
(as I find myself being these days)
I no longer recognize you.
I once thought it impossible
to not recognize that
precise shade of brown as the color of your eyes.
Or be able to pinpoint
The sweet, lovely sound of your laugh
in a crowded room.
I thought that perhaps,
I had the way your body curled
into the hollows of mine-memorized.
Now I'm finding that
other colors crowd out the meaning
and yours is no longer comforting.
And your laugh-
once so familiar
is no longer so easily...

Fragility
She holds her life in her hands-
A butterfly fashioned from spun glass.
Wings of carmine and cobalt send flecks of light
dancing as they flutter to the beat of her heart.
She holds her breath;
hardly daring to breath
for fear of shattering
such a delicate thing.

Backseat Serenade
We fell in love that night
Beneath a sky of shooting stars and waning moon
Hidden away in a garden all our own
We promised the world
But needed nothing more than you and I.
We were high on youth and drunk on love
Our thrones were the worn seats of a Chevy
Our riches and gems nothing more than a battered guitar and combat boots
We lived our lives in a state of eternal summer
We professed young love on tattered back seats
The heady smell of cheap cigarettes and perfume heavy on the midnight air
And the tang of whiskey tainting lover's...

His Blossom
He sees the best in me
Those parts I had long forgotten
Buried so deep I had become blind to their existence
His warm sunny smiles
And soft soothing voice
Coax those parts alive again
Sending them reaching
Seeking for him
Like a plant reaching for the life giving sun
His laughter is like rain
Feeding my soul
Giving this blossom strength to bloom
His crystalline eyes are the sky above
His arms the steady earth on which I stand
His gentle words are soothing winds that whisk away dark clouds
I never once...

A New Adventure
I am terrified of leaving
But far more scared to stay.
This town is not for me.
It's time I went away.
This is my big chance,
A great big opportunity.
Maybe in my new destination
I can finally become all I'm supposed to be.
It will be a new chapter
In the little book fate writes for me
It will be the next big adventure
And where this new road takes me...I simply can't wait to see.
But far more scared to stay.
This town is not for me.
It's time I went away.

Sleeping In
I am warm.
I am safe.
Cocooned in the gentle warmth of soft blankets
Sunlight streaming though an open window
A familiar and fluffy pet snuggled close.
Oh how I adore these lazy mornings
Of sleeping in and dearly beloved pajamas.
It is on these mornings
Nothing exists outside this messy bedroom.
No tests,stress or worry.
Interrupted only by an annoying alarm
Quickly silenced with an irritated groan.
With a quick glance at the time
And the refusal to awaken fully
I burrow deep inside the warmth and soon
Am fast asleep once more...
I am safe.

Sunlight streaming though an open window
A familiar and fluffy pet snuggled close.

Sonnet 1
For who among us has gained immortal life?
Whom among our numbers will ever escape
That fast enroaching day, brought by sickness or knife
Ravaged by misfortune, brought down by fate
Authors,Artists among us have escaped the fade of time
Immortalized in the memories of men
Cast there by publication of tragedies and rhyme
Of stories of love and things that had once been
Immortal men raised so high long ago
Names whispered and passed throughout history
Nothing but works to testify of men who all should know
Brilliant mortal heroes shrouded in mystery...

Ballad of the Flower
There was a flower longing to be adored.
A living testament to love and life and so much more
Like the morning sun unaffected by the night
Each day she woke and graced the world with her humble light
She stood strong against the flood
Grounded deep and strong in the mud
Clouds and sunshine came and passed
This little flower struggled to last
Her petals so beautiful and bright
Gleamed in even the sun's last light
All through the night the flower on guard
This little beauty never would've guessed a flower's life could be so hard
Come morning and...

Beauty
It races through me
Through the very marrow of my bones
To my nerves and heart and soul.
Speechless,lost in this unearthly beauty
The beauty of nature
Enraptured by the curves of the land
Of glistening oceans and uninhabited forests
Everything is lost once more
Beauty overtaking my senses
Bathing me me in a haze of sapphire hued daydreams
Flying far above a carpet of endless white
Under the stately beauty of emerald expanses
I have been gifted with a glimpse into heaven
No longer is there a Me.
Nothing left of a single...
Through the very marrow of my bones
To my nerves and heart and soul.

Battle Scars
I'm not ashamed
Of the lines on my skin
Left there long ago
By the demons within
I'm not ashamed
To stand tall and true
Refusing to bend and cower
Under the gaze of someone like you
I'm not ashamed of my scars
Of self inflicted wounds
Remnants of a war
That raged on so many moons
I'm not ashamed of these badges of war
A sign that I am strong
Stripes of a tiger
That fought back for so long
I'm not ashamed
Of these lines so red
The only outward sign
That there was once demons in my head
I'm...
