POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm a work in progress.
The Proud Pilot
A fighter pilot of the noblest kind,
flew quite quietly in hopes to find,
the world renowned Bermuda Triangle,
(and using the correct coordinated angle)
did in fact prove its very existence,
You see, he felt it was just common sense.
He was a dignified sort of fellow,
always wore a medal golden yellow.
given to him by a worthy general,
worth more than any diamond mineral!
In a uniform, he’s rather dashing.
oh yes, the ladies thought he looked smashing.
Women weren’t impervious to his charms,
when he crash-landed near...

Invisible Service
They do not wear the uniform
or get the accolades.
Yet Army wives deserve
our nation’s thanks and praise.
They did not fight on distant shores
or watch their friends fall down;
but were present for that silence
before the bugler’s Taps would sound.
They did not know what would befall
their men who closed the door.
Some came home, yes some came home—
Some came home no more.
Pride swells in our breast
seeing the stripes and stars;
the sacrifice of service
is borne in battle scars.

The Spirit of Ole Florida
Golden sea oats
waving ships home
sandpipers inspecting
broken seashell coast
Clouds breaking as waves
on the sea of a placid sky
Spanish moss hanging
as clothes when hung to dry
Ants build their pyramids
cottonmouth lurched his head
deep marshes of ole Florida
with a spirit never dead
Strip clubs and malls
hunting and guns
tractors and horses ...

Glaucoma
life was once believed to be
woven from meager strands
of grass, the Inca rope bridge
able to withstand
the weight of travel
perhaps now, she reasoned,
life was not an impossible feat
of engineering;
but rather a delicate chiffon
dress on one's wedding day
torn on thorny brush,
as passing as petals
in summer wind
or perhaps preserved
in a book of poems;

To my Dear and Loving Husband (who I’ll see in 6 weeks)
Don’t know how to face you
but I’ll face you just the same:
being apart has made me strange
a sickness with no name —
How to explain
what I really feel
I don’t feel much these days
I’m unsure how to deal.
But there is shame!
Unrelenting shame
rains from my eyes,
“The indefinite delay game:
Hurry up and wait”
(The Army line!)
Should I tell you a lie
and say that I'm fine?
How did mom survive
when...

The Tree Who Knew All Wars
hatchet-axe
bow and arrow
setting traps
tasting marrow
My tree has roots in Cherokee.
marching through
cannon-fire
reload rifle
battle dire
My tree has roots in Confederacy.

The Heat of the Moment
My friends, true romance:
when my man takes off his pants —
and still has shoes on.

Fool’s Gold
Lower me into the mine,
descended she did,
down the line.
Rope won’t hold,
he cried.
We have time,
she lied.
No, he beseeched,
with trembled sound.
Feet reached
hallowed ground.
Leave me, she pleaded,
as she knelt in the shaft —
I found what I needed :

The Female Form
I see those tiger
stripes on your inner thighs
no other man can see them
for no other man is let inside
dimpled hips
some call cellulite
I call them freckles
that look just right
some call your arms batwings
I call them angel wings
fleshy arms still strong
wrapped around me all night long
passion swells in your belly
I can handle those handles baby
love inside of you
swells in your breasts
no other man has ever seen
such a perfect chest
your back has a wrinkle
not a roll ...

Women’s March
Feminism at its finest:
The women’s march, a noble cause
Fight for equality, for women all
Wait, you don’t like Jews,
Catholics, or pro-life women?
Thought you fought
for all women?

Pig-tails
they dragged her out by her hair
a twiggy girl of fourteen
they planned to rape her but one said
“that Jew is too skinny”
that would not be
the only horror
she would face
bombs overhead
hiding under mattress
on basement floor
soldiers came to ransack
tearing the flesh
of her fingers ...
