POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I have never seen myself as a poet, but the words are scattered across my mind like Autumn leaves soaked and decaying on a late winter morn. I need to clear the corners of my skull, the piles have become too deep to keep inside.
Liking Yourself
They say that you are supposed to like yourself, but I don’t know if I know how. I have spent so much time slashing myself to the bone. Words in my mind tearing me apart, because only I know my true thoughts.
Small victories to start with, find ways to find the good in me they say. But all I see are the things that have defined my tormented soul. It fills me and keeps me from any connection. Feelings are useless things betrayed by the pain. A past engulfing me.
Don’t listen to that inner voice, it tells you lies to tie you down. But what you call lies has been...

Never again
The crime scene was particularly gruesome. Not only for the brutality, but also for victims trophies that were arrayed as evidence against him. See, the victim was a pedophile, there was no doubt about that. The photographs, videos, locks of hair carefully labeled, and articles of clothing all told the story.
If there was anyone who couldn’t read the evidence the note staked to his chest told it all. It said “This bastard has abused his last child”. And that was definitely true. Dead was dead, but everything done to this man made sure he would not abuse again.

To make it through the day
Surrounded by the solitude of those who just don’t care.
I’m more happy with the ruminations in my head.
Making up plans of satisfied wants and needs with dreamed of angels.
Never content with the good enough I already possess.
But afraid of the consequences of the dalliances of the mind.
Would I, could I, should I, questions I just can’t seem to answer.
All the things I deal with just to make it through the day.

Without the medication
I have recently been diagnosed as bipolar. I never felt that I was bipolar, I never have what I consider full blown episodes of mania. But as I look back at who I am I see my mind always running and little things that I do that definitely feel manic.
Well part of the solution to this was a couple of drugs to help stabilize my mood. I have been off work for a couple of months trying to work out everything that has been happening because of my undiagnosed condition. It really seemed that everything was ok, so it was time to get back to work.

Whispers
(i) Essence
My essence screams out
beseeching understanding
but no one listens
(ii) Music
Music in my head
songs echo through my being
all sound fades away
(iii) Consciousness
Words drift in my mind
thoughts awry, consciousness fades
everything goes black
(iv) Serenades
Winds bring serenades
currents are for free fancies
somehow stealing hearts
(v) Voices
Whispers from afar
secret voices in my ears
can anyone hear

Hidden treasures
My fingers glide graciously
over the curves of your body,
like a blind man tracing
the hidden secrets of a page of Braille.
My lips tenderly trace
the tattoos on you skin,
searching eagerly for
the sweet secrets of your soul.
Our bodies intertwined
like pen and paper,
our movements the stanzas
filling the page,
moving on towards
the climactic finale.

Philmont Scout Ranch
I spent years in the Boy Scouts, but the best experience I had was my second summer at the national scout camp, Philmont. It was 1987 and the first time a young boy was really out on his own. I spent the summer working in what was known as the headquarters camp. It was where all of the scouts came to start their hikes into Philmont's 215+ square miles of rough terrain and mountains.
My job was in the commissary, we handled all of the food for everyone working for or visiting the camp. We provided the food for all of the meals served in the dining room in the headquarters...

At the beach
Small waves slowly lapping
the day feels fine to me.
Golden sun shining down
my shoulders warm and strong.
Birds squealing in the sky
circling above my head.
Waves cresting around my calves
the surge is building higher.
Hot sun beating down
my skin inflamed and glowing cherry.
Raptors screeching as they plummet
down and around in a cacophony.
Huge breakers crashing down
washing me out to sea.
Blistering sun hammering down
boiling away my serenity.
How does peace and calm
get swept away leaving ...

Are you there? written for the "Father are you there" competition
Second son,
second best.
I always fell short of
my brother's attempts.
Wanting so badly to live up
to the strict standards of my Dad.
I think I did,
hell I know I did until I crashed,
but never as well
as the elder did.
The one place I excelled
was the one place which broke me.
The best and the worst
of a squandered childhood,
all of it in ashes.
A man through Scouts
answering a child's needs
for his own perverted ends.
But through it all ...
second best.
