POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I have been writing poetry for about 15 years. Most of my poems express my inner feelings and emotions, and are an intimate baring of my soul, although I write some of a more humourous nature.
Doomed Love — Book 2
In hindsight, there was an inevitability
To the tragedy that unfolded that day,
And no doubt that responsibility lay,
With the magnate’s conceited pride,
In proposing a match of such unsuitability
Just to restore the company’s image,
Regardless of the feelings of the bride.
Despite his own family’s humble lineage
As a child she had been strictly forbidden
To associate with the grubby children
Of the common people he so despised.
There had only been one exception
To his foolishly absolute injunction,

Doomed Love — Book 1
Barely visible in the inky gloom,
The cold bodies of the young lovers lay,
Just a glimmer of pale flesh in the dark,
The watery fastness their woeful tomb.
Unmoved by the sun’s warming ray,
Never again would they rise with the lark
And in the meadows laugh and play
Like innocent children out of school,
Or lie on shady banks beside the brook
On hazy afternoons where the air was cool
Happily lost in the pages of a book,
Dreaming of days of endless bliss.
But now entwined in fatal embrace,
The water’s kiss their final breath, ...

Unrequited Love
Oh lady fair, so haughty, and so coldly proud,
Entreat though I may, naught it seems, can ever pierce
The adamantine shell that guards your cruel soul,
And even my most honeyed words are all in vain.
However hard I strive to rise above the crowd
Of those that press about your feet, whose cries so fierce
Each clamour to be heard; and were I to enrol
The gods above, my suit would surely end in pain.
In truth, I do not ask for much, no special place,
But though I send not gifts of silver or of gold,
Nor even as some do, a wreath of flowers fine; ...

The Spirit Of The Dance
In the stillness of the before, you languished,
Patiently awaiting the long foreseen call
No more than a thought on the face of the void.
Then out of the silence, the voice of wisdom
Began to sing the eternal harmony,
And you awoke from your slumber and took form
And started to dance over the dark abyss,
A majestic dance of rapture and delight.
As your fleet steps flew over the nothingness
Tiny specks of matter unfurled like flowers,
And bloomed, giving substance to wisdom’s desires,
The moment of beginning of creation. ...

Why, Oh Why
In recent months I have been to four funerals,
All of them close friends I have known for many years,
People I respected, and in some cases loved;
People who had all led rich and fulfilling lives,
All loved by family, successful in business,
And who had all served their local communities,
Enriching others through voluntary service,
Often going the extra mile for no reward
Other than the satisfaction of grateful smiles.
Every day we learn in the news of other deaths,
Of lives tragically lost through no fault of their own
Other than that...

True Love Found
Every minute I think of you my love
Light of my life and sweet joy of my days,
In you I have found my true heart’s desire,
Zenith of my ambition and my goal,
All my life has led me to this moment.
Before I found you my life was empty
Even the glories of nature seemed dull,
Then you came along and everything changed,
Heaven smiled on me and the world lit up,
Bringing undreamed of hope and joy divine.
Lady of my dreams I pledge you my life,
Ask what you will and I will gladly serve,
Caring only for your true happiness.
Kisses...

In Memory If Those Who Have Gone Before
Hello, I'm Saffie and I'm just eight years old.
I hope you'll forgive me if I don't make much sense,
But I'm a bit confused just at this moment
And I don't quite understand what's going on.
Mum and Dad had promised me something special,
A really nice treat for my birthday present,
And I jumped for joy when they told me the news
About the tickets for the Ariana gig.
We got a train from Preston to Manchester,
Just Mum, my sister and me — it’s not Dad’s scene;
It was great — the entrance to the Arena
Was right by the train station — we went...

Utter Desolation
Lost and alone, abandoned to my fate,
I wander in the barren wilderness
Despised and forsaken, longing for death.
The cold and bitter ashes of remorse
Fill my mouth with gall, and blister my tongue,
And utter self loathing darkens my mind.
Broken on the wheel of my arrogance,
I bend my head to this desolation.
No act of abject mortification
Can cleanse my soul of my iniquities,
And condemned to eternal suffering,
I must live the rest of my days in pain,
Just punishment for my brutality,
My undeserved and heartless cruelty, ...

Redemption
In the grim back alleys of the city,
Mean streets devoid of all signs of pity,
Amid the piles of decaying refuse
And slimy pools of darkly noxious ooze,
Frequented only by the scuttling rats
And noisome tribes of scabby feral cats;
Here, slumped in doorways, human flotsam lies,
Just filthy piles of rags crawling with flies.
In such surroundings one would not expect
To find evidence of beauty’s rare spark,
Yet with more careful eye one may detect,
Delicate flowers glowing in the dark,
Rare signs that life defeat will never know, ...

Contemplating Life And Love
People have many different ways to find peace
When living is just becoming too hard to bear,
For some it is in sleep, some have a special place,
Others seek the company of lighthearted friends,
Some settle down with a book, others meditate,
And many spoil themselves with a favourite food.
I have a special place where I like to escape
For a few days whenever it is possible,
Where there is such quietness and tranquility
That my mind is emptied of negative feelings
And I rediscover the lightness of being
That I had forgotten in the bustle of...
