In our chemical-inherited selves the elaborate winding corridors of the psyche
Dance to synapses’ complex tune.
Molecular decision-whispers guide
The fleeting moments of human decision
While chemistry of the mind, conducts the orchestral behaviour.
Neurotransmitters, elusive messengers in their web of shadows,
Wield an understated symphonic power
Directing the flow from the primary motor cortex.
They shape the cadence, leaving an indelible imprint

Encumbrance
Encumbrance
By Michael McManus
Beneath the relationship’s weight he falters and strains,
Assuming a miserable burden, laden in a constant Gregorian chant.
Looming large, his presence, for her, a heavy hindrance,
An added load to her daily trials, and his.
Amid this suffocating hold he craves their liberation,
To discover a route where freedom's light flickers,
To demonstrate beyond this oppressive form's span
There resides a spirit sturdy, resilient, sovereign.
Portrait of the heavily hindered. Soft pastel.

Old Top Knot
Old Top Knot
By Michael McManus
In Durham City, an old chap did reside,
His top knot perched high, impossible to hide.
With hair so thin, it seemed almost a prank,
But he flaunted that knot, like a captain his plank.
As folks passed him by, they couldn't help but stare,
At the audacious style of his thinning hair.
Whispers and giggles followed him around,
Yet he grinned right back, with a mischievous sound.
When the wind picked up, oh what a sight to behold,
His knot swayed and wobbled, like a story untold.
But he...

Across the table
Across the table
By Michael McManus
The table stands as a symbolic barrier to me - I am told one I can’t easily come across,
It represents a daunting gap they say I must bridge, but it’s difficult for me.
A challenge is thrown my way, urging a reversal of the expected narrative,
Questioning the necessity, I stubbornly resist the constraints imposed by rigid expectations.
The response reverberates with the reinforcement of stereotypes,
They construct a confining structure of career assumptions.
Within my quiet demeanour, a strong rebellion...

Portrait of a Know-it-all
Portrait of a Know-it-all
By Michael McManus
Of wisdom, encounters often arise,
A know-it-all, swiftly wielding knowledge's weight.
Their advice echoes, "Avoid that path," they declare,
A constant stream of assertiveness flowing free.
With airs of superiority, they wear knowledge, apparent, like a crown,
Imparting counsel as if adorned in royal garments they sport,
"You should choose this, not that," unequivocally expressed,
As if their words alone could shape life's trajectory. ...

Transformative Imagination
Transformative Imagination
By Michael McManus
Once, a man, a soul with a lackluster hue,
His very presence casting a somber shade on others.
Not merely tedious himself, but infecting others with his contagion,
Transmitting his symptoms in a web of mundanity and distemperature.
His speech monotonous, tales void of fervour,
Every word a lullaby, invoking heavy sighs and sleep.
His once lively companions, brimming with vigour, gradually mirrored him,
Their narratives and themselves, growing dull, stale and heavy.

Custard Fury
Custard Fury
By Michael McManus
In a kitchen embraced by warmth,
Air heavy with brewing conflict,
A man, cushioned by indulgence
Flaunts his inflamed visage, crimson-raw with anger.
"Mother," his voice, a narcissistic plea
Echos through the room, demanding obedience,
"This custard's too dense, an egregious flaw!
Lumpy, burdensome, a culinary transgression!"
His mother, a bastion of composure,
Meets his grandiose gaze, unwavering,
Stirring the custard with a practiced hand, ...

If Everything Were Right
If Everything Were Right
In life's tapestry of twists and turns,
A paradox in each lesson learned:
If all were right, no shadows cast,
Would we truly cherish moments past?
For sweetness blooms in contrast's embrace,
In shadows' dance and challenges we face,
If skies were always clear and bright,
Would stars still dazzle in endless night?
The bitter taste, the uphill climb,
They lend the heart its rhythm, its rhyme,
If everything flowed as a tranquil stream,
Would spirits yearn, would we dare to dream?

The Crucifix
The Crucifix
By Michael McManus
In cloistered halls where wisdom's light does gleam,
A nun bestowed a gift, a sacred dream,
A crucifix of wood, a symbol pure,
To bless and guide, its meaning to endure.
With tender words, she bid me go,
To priest's abode, where blessings freely flow,
I took the cross, entrusted in my care,
To seek the priest's solemn blessing there.
Returned, the crucifix, now blessed anew,
I placed it in the nun's kind hands, her due.
Yet on my birthday's dawn, a joy untold,
The nun returned...

Animal Absurdity
Animal Absurdity
By Michael McManus.
A flying pig
In a lawyer's wig
Launched high in a car
Aimed straight for a star.
And a big brown bear
In pink underwear
With a quick red fox
With bright yellow socks
In a giant shoe
That was hardly new
Went too.

Dance with the Fairies (An Allegory for imaginative writers)
Dance with the Fairies (An Allegory for imaginative writers)
By Michael McManus
In the world of fairies, so enchanting and bright,
Where moonbeams dance and stars take flight,
Do you still reside, in that mystical land,
Where magic and wonder go hand in hand?
Beneath the toadstool's umbrella of green,
In a realm where fantasy is often seen,
Do you frolic with sprites in the shimmering light,
Where dreams come to life every single night?
The fairies, they whisper, and the flowers all sing,

Prayer Through Space Junk
Prayer through Space Junk
By Michael McManus
Onward to heaven, where prayers are sent,
Beneath the stars, where hopes are dreamt,
A cosmic dance, a cluttered sky,
The prayers ascend, but some deny.
Space junk we've sown, a celestial sea,
It orbits high, where dreams should be,
Prayers deflect in debris's maze,
Yet faith persists through planetary haze.
Though space may deflect their earthly plea,
In hearts, their hopes and prayers break free,
For in the vastness of this stellar tide,
