POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Far Away
You offer me protection and you make it seem so easy.
All I have to do is let go, you'll take care of the rest.
Like I can take shelter in you,
Pull your skin over my shoulders to keep me warm,
Tuck my head under your skull to keep me safe
And let you circle my heart with your hands to keep me whole.
But I know how fast a cradle and turn into a vice,
And I know how fast a good man can turn into a bad man
Because bad men look like good men,
And my heart is no safer in your hands than it would be in your mouth.
In your mouth where you could take a...

Hey, so
Hey, so, I'm glad we were able to get out for a little bit.
I think it's important to have these kinda conversations face to face,
So, here it goes.
I don't think we should do this anymore.
This weird... whatever it is thing that we're doing.
It just doesn't seem very good for us.
Not that we haven't had our moments!
Of course we have, and that fun hasn't gone away.
It's just that, maybe...
I guess I'm worried that we're going in two different directions.
Like you're skipping off one way, and I'm trying to make my way over...

Vestigial
Whales lost their legs over 40 million years ago.
Tired of the dust and the heat, they shook off their terrestrial skin, and became part of the water around them.
And yet, though their legs have long faded away, still all whales are born with pelvic bones, floating unarticulated and completely useless under their skin, reminders of days spent in a world they no longer know.
I think about this, and about pinkie toes, wisdom teeth, tailbones and I wonder what will be vestigial 200,000 years from now.
As we go, we grow out of and into things, leaving parts of...

Intentions
When I stand on the tops of tall places, I often look to the ground and want to jump.
I don’t know why. I know it would kill me and I have no intention of dying, so I don’t do it, but a part of me wants to.
Wants like the way sunlight wants to reach the earth, wants like the way water wants to run downhill and like gravity wants to drag everything together and hold it tight where it can’t get away.
I don’t know if it’s the thrill, the escape, the adventure of falling.
I don’t know if it’s the morbid curiosity of what death would feel like.
It could...

Navy Skin
My dad found his ocean. My father has been proudly serving in the United States Navy for over thirty years.
He’s only ever had, only ever wanted the one job. He is what his job is and he’s never wanted to be anything else.
But he’ll be retiring soon.
Hanging up his navy skin, and I don’t know what color he will be underneath it.
I think he will still be the same. His years wearing the clothes of his job have stained his skin in the same pattern and though he can turn in his uniform and give his last salute, his bones will still carry the badges and his...

Ships
The ocean is not deep by virtue of being the ocean.
The ocean is deep because it is weighed down by fleets of ships.
Vessels of strength and possibility, drowned with water and darkness and drawn to the bottom that they create.
Ships float only so long as they are ships.
When they are not, they are just periods at the end of sentences that were never finished.

Dragonfly Wings
Look,
I know I said “I love you,” and it’s still true, but I’m seriously wishing I could take it back,
See,
I don’t love the way you do.
Romantic love is a foreign concept dropped down to earth in stardust.
While it makes some people shimmer it just makes me sneeze.
Romantic love is different for everyone.
For my mom, love is reliability, for family, home and good laughs
For my dad it is someone he can trust and bug and hold.
For my brother is it watching the same cartoons and having good boobs.
For my sister it is someone who can survive...
