POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Songs and Seas
I am in love with voice and song
To that which gives, and gives no wrong
Who sings and notes of things unknown
And gives to man what God has shown
I sing with love and all the while
A saddened heart looks up to smile,
The lowest fiend would walk his miles,
And Hercules would fail his trials
Who sings amidst their deepest woes?
Who chants to God where'er he goes?
A lightened heart, renewed and ready
His feet sojourned, and soul yet steady
He sails the seas and mutes him not
For all the waves the tempest wrought ...
To that which gives, and gives no wrong
Who sings and notes of things unknown
And gives to man what God has shown
I sing with love and all the while
A saddened heart looks up to smile,
The lowest fiend would walk his miles,
And Hercules would fail his trials
Who sings amidst their deepest woes?
Who chants to God where'er he goes?
A lightened heart, renewed and ready
His feet sojourned, and soul yet steady
He sails the seas and mutes him not

A Swan Call
I will awake to greet your dawn
To thank you for your many ways
For men are vain and work is strife
But you are giver of all life
You are giver of all days
Who can know you or your son?
Whom to him has been revealed?
By your song you quell the nations
By your hand they fade away
By your love this great elation
Grants the world a brighter day
We have seen the wrath in waiting
We have heard the cries of youth
We have felt the mind sedating
We have touched the tribes of truth
Who can know what...

For karov is HaYom
Who is John, and who am I?
To think the end is coming nigh
For nearer still than yesterday
Are trumpets of the judgement day.
No eye can see, nor mind discern
What God has planned for His return
A day when all is plain and bare
And nothing will be hidden there
No heart deceives nor tounge persuades
No beating heart the dark invades
A day the righteous are to share
And nothing will be hidden there
A day when war will cease its call
A day when pride will take its fall

Of war and tears
O, what a sight was that to see
That blighted grave beside the sea
Where once I tread among those dead
For once, and all eternity!
Have you once heard that sneer'd command?
That sent my brothers to this land
Whose soil drinks our very blood
And tears abound as Noah's flood
Have you once heard my sniveling cries?
As Europe sank to her demise
We dared not ask, nor question still
What dreams we must fulfill or kill
For country! Glory! All the rest..
And pound my soul from heart to breast

Of time, and other commentary
If time were true, and tulips grew
In summer's shade, or autumn's sun
Then what would be of all we knew
And what would come of all our fun?
No birthdays, seasons time or trial
Nor foot nor dry nor wet her mile
No distance-- there-- to keep away
Nor wind to push or pull or sway
A cloud never dies, nor rains predict
No times to be home nor time derelict
No night and no day, no harvest or toil
No worship of mammon from cradle to soil
No life and no death, no evil or light
No poetry-- never a poem to write ...

A man I knew relayed some noise
And through his solemn equipoise
Drowned out sorrow as he began
To tell the world "THEY ALWAYS CAN"
He raged and railed from end to end
Of hedges just around the bend
Of Barclay, Morgan, and the like
As hatred fumed from all his might
He cursed the dollars he had scorned
And prayed the hedge was never born
And further still, the man that milled
And toiled hard, his hardness killed..
For in his heart a void from birth
Delayed what he had counted worth
He filled that void...

Encouragement
If life would take you to the sea
And send you far and far from me
Remember us and this the same:
The waves and wind still know his name
If men would whisper "dumb and fools"
And try to trick you with their tools
Remember this, and to their shame!
The waves and wind still know his name
If all the gates of heaven cease
And dew your eyes to steal your peace
Remember well th'eternal flame:
The waves and wind still know his name
And send you far and far from me
Remember us and this the same:
The waves and wind still know his name
If men would whisper "dumb and fools"
And try to trick you with their tools
Remember this, and to their shame!
The waves and wind still know his name
If all the gates of heaven cease
And dew your eyes to steal your peace
Remember well th'eternal flame:
The waves and wind still know his name

A brief passage
And oft as she would come and see
And press her body close to me
I hear her voice so near and yonder
To wring the tides of those who wander
And says:
The sands of time beneath thy feet
Are mine for whom the waters meet
I know each grain and see each way
And break their darkness into day
I see all light, and know its path
I know the Voice, and know its wrath
I've seen the saints who suffer still
And earth and men who've had their fill
I've seen their blood and known their life
I've seen them pray through pain and strife ...
And press her body close to me
I hear her voice so near and yonder
To wring the tides of those who wander
And says:
The sands of time beneath thy feet
Are mine for whom the waters meet
I know each grain and see each way
And break their darkness into day

I know the Voice, and know its wrath
I've seen the saints who suffer still

Whole
Every word and every thought
Was mine when all was said and bought
Who knew? that in my own desire
Your kindled spirit lights that fire
Who drew me close? Who called you near?
Who weaps when life would bring you cheer?
Who knew the empty, sullen train
Should bring me back to you again?
'Twas not men
I knew your words, and know them still
To fear them not who maim and kill
For flesh and fragrance in a flash
Would last a moment's bitter lash
And on that road when I did weep
And saw...

Count (the blessings)
If one could count a billion stars
Or count the sands beside the sea
Then time would heal a million scars
And live to tell the times for thee
If two could sing the songs of ages
And find the secrets of this life
Too dumb we'd count the wisest sages!
And find that life was filled with strife
But in your arms are no equations
Nor peaks the mountains dare contend
For hand in hand are kings and nations
And in a single breath, their end
For three could find the rhymes of others
And at their end they find your...
