Another Man's Meat
Technologically inundated
Our whole lives wasted
Playing mule or driver
Scrambling
Scrounging
For another dollar
Another penny
When capitalism has taken over
Everything
And all we know
“Can we turn a profit?
Can we make a dime?
Well, if not, I’m sorry
But I just don’t have the time!”
Corporate louses
Like blood-heavy ticks
Draining the life
Out of anything
Everything
They can latch onto-
Greed, avarice
Keeping up with the Joneses
Gluttony
And overconsumption
The lust for power
And...

The Donkey and the Elephant, or Bipartisan Politics
The donkeys and the elephants
Met on the field of war
To call a congress and parley
About who holds the floor
“Our side is right!”
They each did cry
And chant among their ranks
“Give us the power and control
Over the oil and the banks!”
“We know what’s best!”
They each did roar
And posture once again
“We know what’s best for us
And our conglomerated friends!”
“Let us have the military!
And impose martial law!
We know best which country
To send our next great war!”
The only time they’re unified
Is...

Pretty Little Dollies
Pretty little dollies
With pretty button eyes
Stuffed and sewn and patched
With pretty little lies
Porcelain and plastic
See how bright they shine
Their smiles painted on
In pretty little lines
See how they sit
Upon their dusty shelf
Keeping pretty little secrets
To their pretty little selves
In the dark they whisper
Quiet as a mouse
Hop on down
And play at life
In their pretty little house
In pretty little clothes
They dress themselves so nice
Playing out their pretty lies

The State of the Union
The state of the Union?
Well really, there isn’t
It’s all just a farce
To make reality pleasant
“Of the People, By the People”
Is heralded true
When really your lives
Are controlled by a few
Those corporate fatcats
And barons of oil
Who let us do the work
And reap all the spoils
Who buy off the brass
And govern on high
Above all the laws
That the rest must abide
Who pay no living wage
And increase the debt
Only out for themselves;
Fuck all the rest
Well really, there isn’t

Age of Machine
A golden age passes
As these things do
Time marches on
And history proves true
Mankind had its zenith
And now, the fall
As the machines take power
To conquer the sprawl
As humanity watches
Through unseeing eyes
Technology gains
And starts its rise
So turn on your tube
Upgrade and upload
Oblivious to all
As you’re softly controlled
Log in and join
To the online mind
Like worker bees dancing
And cogs that grind
“Come join your friends!
You’re all unique!
But none good enough

Winter
Winter comes slowly
Silent, in the night
Stalking through the darkness
Chased away in light
Until it then grows bolder
And sinks in icy claws
Heralding the frozen months
With hoarfrost on its jaws
Roaming like a savage beast
It prowls across the land
Til spring and sun and flowers
Chase it to its den
In time, it will slumber
Through the summer months
Dreaming when it can again
All life once more affront
Yet it serves its purpose
To remind us in its thrall
That nothing lasts forever
There is an end...

A Candle Going Out
Inside an empty church
The last candle’s going out
With no one to relight it,
No soul to be found
As the stained-glass saints
Continue looking down
Judging with unseeing eyes
Sneering with a frown
The pews disused and empty
No hymns do fill these halls
Just oppressive silence
Contained within the walls
While the dust upon the alter
Rests like a funeral pall
If heard a plaintive cry for help
What God would heed its call?
The dying light plays softly
Over the martyred son
Shrouding him in shadows

Soma
A bottle of little white pills
Open, on its side
Strewn across the table
In a pharmaceutical cascade
Just for looks,
For contemplation
They haven’t been taken
They won’t be-
Little round blankets
Of emotional insulation
Making life more bearable
By robbing all sentiment
It’s frightening, simultaneously
Sparking appeal and
Revulsion, some gut feeling
Of not being right, and yet
Apathetic- but is that
A side-effect? Or
A symptom?
Is it worth it?
To forego emotion,
The highest highs
And lowest...

The Alcoholic's Lament
Excuse me, barkeep
This glass has a hole, I think
It seems that by the
Time you pour
I already need a new drink
What’s that? Drunk?
You think I’ve had plenty?
I assure you sir
I’ve quite a ways yet
To that proverbial
“one too many”
A lush? No sir,
I’m merely tolerant-
It simply takes me more
To forget what I want
And remember what I can’t
I just take a little more
To distance from my pain
I haven’t been here long enough
But I’ll leave in time
To walk home in the rain
So please, another...

Alcohol
Lost in the sea of myself
Adrift, alone
Plagued by a cruel wind-
Remembrance;
Whipping
Churning
Boiling the mental waves,
Drowning me in 90 proof-
Only leaving me to crash
Upon the rocks of an empty glass
Stranded in the wasteland
My own cries echoing back
From the empty confines of my mind
Searching for my drunken genie-
A wish, a wish!
Just one!
Where is my Xanadu?
My Shangri-la?
My Elysian fields?
Where might I find
Some fragrant
Forgiving
Balm of Gilead?
Or
Am I doomed
To constant...

Puppet(Master)
Puppet, marionette
High on a wire
Actions controlled
By a cerebral spider
Leader, master
Incomparable liar
Dance to his tune
Pulled ever higher
Life-leached, blood-drained
Marked an outsider
Burned to the bone
Torched by the fire
Still dancing away
On the funeral pyre
Led on, on, on
By an obscured supplier
Whispering love and fame
Temptation and change
Stealing your soul
While entrapped in the mire
High on a wire
Actions controlled
By a cerebral spider
Leader, master
Incomparable liar
Dance to his tune
Pulled ever higher
Life-leached, blood-drained
Marked an outsider
Burned to the bone
Torched by the fire

Led on, on, on

Narcissus In Chains
Narcissus in chains
Head hung in shame
Where once was beauty
Now nothing remains
No other to blame
Self-bound and tamed
The pitiful, once proud
Narcissus in chains
A flower in bloom
Eventually wilts
Bright leaves growing dim
As essence is spilt
Lifeblood grows weak
Decrepit and stained
All pretty things fade
As the earth lays claim
Broken and twisted
Like narcissus in chains
Reflected in a pool
An image shows true
Until shattered and torn
By a rock falling through
Rippling, tattering
Illusion...
