Black Men in Torn Coats
Our natural coat
It’s torn
With discrepancy and fear
Prejudice and lies
Misconception
And racial eyes
• Our natural coat
Brown, black, ebony
All different shades
Not one color
Defines our epidermis
• Our natural coat
Is lovable
To significant others
Family and friends
Fresh as
Coffee in a cup
• Our natural coat
Comes in
All different sizes
Shapes
And different types
• Our natural coat
Is a gift
But also
A curse
Lost opportunities ...
It’s torn

I’m Disposable
Without motivation
Where is the strength
For me to move
Without motivation
I find myself
Sitting still
No progress
No want
I find myself
Slowly withering away
Hidden within
Material things
I bought for
My security blanket
What people see
They believe
Everything is good
While I
Is torn up inside
No love
Or one person
Can break me away
From these dark feelings
Constantly swirling
Within my head
My pride
Won’t let me
Tell all
To someone...
Where is the strength
For me to move

My New Year Me
I shiver
As the temps
Dip below the negatives
With this cold
I’ll be able to
Enjoy the warmth
Without hardships
I wouldn’t be able to
Enjoy success
Without heartbreak
I wouldn’t know
What real love is
As I embark into
This New Year
Different thoughts
And ways of life
Fills my head
I’ll continue to work
And improve myself
I have lots to learn
And failure I’ll endure
But I will
Shake it off
And try again
I will
Help less
Give a little more ...

Why Must We Die
Birds flying away
An airplane taken off
Is this how
We leave this earth
When our time is up
Leaving our bodies
For our loved ones
To cry over
Releasing our minds
Far, far
Away from here
I wonder
As this week
I found out
An old friend
I haven’t spoken to
Since high school
Had passed away
Shocking news
Surprisingly
The feelings I got
After reading RIP
On Facebook
That feeling
We
As the people I grew up with
I once knew
In school
Today ...

A Staircase with No Handrail
A moment of silence
As I
Retrieve my thoughts
Today is the day
My dad passed away
Twenty first of December
No longer Christmas
Brings a cheer
And New Year’s
Starts on the twenty first
For me
And in my thoughts
I ask myself
How am I
Since that
Sad day
On the outside
I appear the same
But deep inside
I hide from myself
No answers
Or ideas of what
Direction
I am going
Many weekends
I feel bored
No one
I can physically
Converse with ...
As I

It’s seventy one degrees
But when I awake
It’s forty three
The temperature I feel
No longer my blood flows
Fully
Throughout my body
My heart is broken
It still pumps

The Sounds of Ocean Waves
When in doubt
Alone
And lost
Within myself
I sit down
Sometimes
I lay down
And take my mind
On a trip
Down memory lane
To a place
That was magical
Unbelievable
As I was experiencing it
That very day
And I was
So happy
Just to see
A big body of water
For the first time
In my life
That will always
Be special to me
Reasons why
When I’m down
This memory
Is my go to
That always
Bring a smile
To my face
Remembering
The ocean...
Alone
And lost
Within myself
I sit down

My Sight of Assurance
I work
And I think of home
A windy thunderstorm
Has came along
Blowing trees over
And power lines
But yet
The shop I work at
The power stays on
Go figure
But I think of home
My house
Surrounded by trees
A roof
That’s half naked exposed
In the middle of
Getting replaced
It’s finally
Time to go
I drive
Past fallen tree branches
And trash
In my mind
I’m worrying
That I will see the worst
At my address
So I drive
But a gas station sign ...
And I think of home

Our Time Hasn’t Stopped
In the short time
We were together
US
We were special
Our conversations
Was always uplifting
And our hugs
Was magical
Like no other
That feeling
So many words
Comes to mind
But I will say
Our memories
Won’t go away
There’s a hold
Mentally
Deep inside
That won’t let go
But
The way of life
Let us know
It wasn’t our time
We split
With no more words said
Physically
We can run
But what’s in our minds
Can’t be erased
It’s super glued ...
We were together

We were special

Routine sightings
