the leaves fall
like crumpled
paper birds
early shadows
fold and
unfold with
the upturned
pulse of the trees
by tomorrow
the passing
rush of the geese
will have forgotten
our separate hands

of our footsteps

old leaves
follow
the curve
of the water
and now
that the rain
has ended
the trees bend
their branches,
heavy with the push
of the fading season,
