POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Hi, it's me, John. Don't claim to be a poet or an artist, more of a scribbler and doodler. Words and art are just my attempt to free my inner self, the me without all the labels.
An Open Road
Put down the pen someone else gave you. No one ever drafted a life worth living on borrowed ink. Get to San Francisco. Get to San Francisco in defiance of your geography, your ancestry, and the lonely change rattling sad excuses in your pocket. Fuel up on pie and diner coffee and mystic visions and the freedom of not knowing what’s coming next except that you’re burning the road to outrun it.
Get going.”

Il Bacio Della Morte (the kiss of death)
To whom do I write?
To you that would love.
What is this place that sadness echoes here
though sadness has no voice?
If tears were the ocean would you cry them for me,
that I might drown in them and find my depth?
What is passionless marriage,
but slow torture and quicker death.
I am as the Rock of Gibralter.
What else can one be,
caressed by the beckoning seas,
separate,
but ever anchored to the unyielding shore?
***
[No Man's Land]
That which had been kept for so long by silent agreement...

Why?
I’ve often wondered at depth of night
Is there farther space beyond where the stars appear?
A place that’s stranger to the light,
Silent,
Black primeval night.
***
What is the depth where silence cries
For tear drops echo here
And how hard the heart that no longer tries
For tears cannot wear away the stone
Found within your eyes.
And Yet,
I would hear you say
"I love you."
To me
Where is the tender kiss good night or the gentle...

Simply
Melting into the air
Softly whispered words
As if the blowing of a kiss
Simply
Sweet nothings
Between you and I
Which draw my heart as with silken cords
How else is someone held
If not with the heart?
Imagination always speaks with deeper sweeps
Than memory recalls
And hope takes flight on frailer wings
Than should take flight at all
Speak to me the depth of dreams
Which wing the breadth of your heart
While morning stars sail the heavens
Before fading into dawn
I dream not just of days...
Softly whispered words

What are daydreams ~
Simply insubstantial things
Memory and imagination mingled
That hope might find her place
Like prayers of child-like faith
Suspended
In innocent sophistication
For my heart still hopes for such
Dreams as you inspire
And dares believe
Such insubstantial things
Have the weight to shape my world
What was it about you which first gave me pause
About the direction of my tomorrows?
Like a strand of hair that lifts and floats ...

Prelude
Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation."

I rise early
In the winter to the cold
And darkness
And in the spring
To the first faint trace of rose
Which bathes the morning sky
While the dew lays on the lawn a silvery sheen
As if in remembrance of the waning moon
And fog lies along the low lands
Down along the creek and river
