3 buttons

friendly feedback
honest criticism
no comments

would the webmistress be open to the idea of relabeling that second option to 'honest critique'?

i'm not surprised people are thinking the second is inviting people to say "bad stuff" about writes.

critique has a bad enough rep as it is with too many not understanding what it actually is—or even what makes for good or bad critique— without it being labeled as 'criticism' which inherently carries overtones of unpleasantness.

hmmn, what makes it even more confusing is the choice of label 'honest criticism' then shows up below the submission as 'the author encourages honest critique'—so even there we have some ambiguity of intent.

I would prefer a two-button system

Positive Feedback
No comments please

The term "Honest Critique" is usually hijacked by those egos who want to tear down rather than build up. they kick out with harsh critiques like second rate newspaper critics discouraging poets to put pen to paper.
They don't offer "Honest Critique" they enforce it. The button, honest criticism in many cases is an oxymoron the same would be true with a  so-called Honest Critique button.

why the choice? friendly feedback or honest criticism. shouldn't all critique be friendly?

sometimes when people check the honest criticism button they don't see the potential that a critter will give them dishonest and harsh critique - this place has a history of that.

critique has its place, but when a critter engages in that kind of critique they should just be ignored, they hide behind the honest criticism button and they would hide behind the Honest Critique button escaping sanctions.

The two-button system would to a greater extent move these people elsewhere. Honest Critique should only be given if asked for. Ther is an official group nad plenty of helpful poets out there willing to help.

It's a good suggestion, butters.  Even the experts agree there is some ambiguity of intent.

Some interesting thoughts regarding Critique vs criticism from Wiki:

In French, German, or Italian, no distinction is drawn between 'critique' and 'criticism': the two words both translate as critique, Kritik, and critica, respectively. In the English language, according to philosopher Gianni Vattimo, criticism is used more frequently to denote literary criticism or art criticism, that is, the interpretation and evaluation of literature and art; while critique may be used to refer to more general and profound writing as Kant's Critique of pure reason.  Another proposed distinction is that critique is never personalized nor ad hominem, but is instead the analyses of the structure of the thought in the content of the item critiqued.  This analysis then offers by way of the critique method either a rebuttal or a suggestion of further expansion upon the problems presented by the topic of that specific written or oral argumentation. Even authors that believe there might be a distinction suggest that there is some ambiguity that is still unresolved.

Believe it or not
i've run into people
WHO HAVE A GENUINE INTEREST in becoming a better writer.  Many have privately messaged me for help.

How then, say You, can these people get help directly from something they post
if not a request for improvement help?

personally, i see no reason to view critique as unfriendly but rather to welcome the different opinions, see how they resonate with my own thoughts. if i can improve through suggestions, i consider that very friendly! of course, there will be some whose idea of a good critique are as far removed from the reality (for reasons more to do with their own egos than the benefit of the poem in question) that it makes their opinions not so important: ALWAYS consider the source.
