Let Me Back in the Box

(There is no peace like that of darkness...)

I was born in a box,
a shadowless interior,
starved for stimulation,
devoid of any comfort the senses
might bring.

From the golden arc of the perambulator
I learned to grope, to see, to hear.
In a world of infant terror, the senses
were my only companions. Never did I know
that tomb of darkness was craving to
follow me, bury me in once more.

Now, at forty, I have grown tired of
the feeble light which filters through
dirty windows and the innate sadness
of doorways. The songs repeated relentlessly
in my head sadden me. I remember the sweetness of
your touch, that silk on satin, something
forever denied to me now.

I yearn to be back in that black box
again, to be swathed in the ebon swaddling
of solitude. To enfold myself in that blanket
of unwinking stars, be rid of these
painful faculties, an unstirring, lovely
corpse, those bitter instruments that
only render you more vividly in my mind.
