My name is Samuel Pete
And in alphabetical order
They said to speak aloud.
I whispered in the darkness,
Underneath the kids so proud.
They sung their words
And told their stories
While I waited nervously in line.
And the kid before me stood up tall
What a way to show his pride.
So after all was said and done,
It was me, the last, the only one
To tell his life long story
Full of happy thoughts and future glories.
Oh to the kids before me,
If only they felt the hatred
Near my belt.
Their happy lives and fathers wives
The cartoons and ham/egg melts.
But when I stood up tall
I realized that the grown ups knew what I'd say.
That I 'woke up Sunday morning
Got out of bed and warm chocolate was on the way.'
That, as a fourteen year old,
I had nothing special going on.
Too young to hold a job,
Too young for senior prom.
So I coughed into the microphone
And began to give a speech.
"Ladies and gentlemen,
Boys and girls, my name is Samuel Pete,
And most of you may know me as the kid with jet-black hair,
Hair down to my shoulders, as if I fucking care."
It was then in the crowd they stood real firm,
Not knowing what to do.
But I lifted my palm, and told them all,
"I am not finished, not quite through.
My stepmother is a bitch, and my father is a drunk.
But that allowed me to see real clear,
So hey, what the fuck?"
"I notice all around me.
I notice all the smiles.
I notice all the faces, all the anger, all the while.
While girls and boys my age
Are hormone crazed and playing sports,
I help my father look away, I take the coke before he snorts.
So, think of me as beyond my age.
I may be fourteen, but in my mind, I am engaged.
Engaged in perspective, engaged in reflection,
My name is Samuel Pete, and I respect imperfection."
