Poetry Contest

Write a poem that contains some aspect of fairy tale mythology
So competition details.

I love poems about mythology of any nature, and I would like to challenge my fellow poets to write a poem that is about or related to some sort of fairy tale mythology. I know a lot about European mythology, but please feel free to bring any other cultures into the mix. Just be sure to add at the end of your poem where you drew your inspiration from. Oh, and the more unique the better. One of my personal favorite retellings of a fairy tale creature is Siren Song by Margaret Atwood, so check it out if you should need any inspiration One poem per person, any length is acceptable, and old or new poems you create are welcome. All the best, and I'm looking forward to any entries!

THE SNOW QUEEN

The Snow Queen's beauty was known throughout the land

Afraid to lose her beauty, a virgin she remained

Many tried to woo her, only to fail, no desire heated her

She was the Queen of the Cold in every single way

One day, a handsome man appeared - called Lord Joy

He asked to be permitted to have an audience with her Majesty

Granted, when he kneeled before her, he did not stand up

"Rise, please Lord Joy" was the Queen's command

When she looked at him she was struck by his darkness

Black hair, black eyes, olive skin so different from her pallour

He asked permission to visit for a while

It was immediately granted

Sir Joy wrote a poem to the Queen every single day

She found them so enchanting, she invited him to dine alone

In her private apartments, where few were ever welcome

While they dined she found herself totally charmed by this stranger

She invited him several times and finally confessed

"Lord Joy, I remain a virgin because I am afraid of sex"

My poor mother died in childbirth and so you see

Having a husband, sex and children could be the end of me"

Lord Joy sought the chemist and the Queen's physician

Found a cure for this awkward position

He calmed the queen and initiated her into the joys of sex

A kind and gentle lover, the Queen did not suffer, he had done everything right

The Snow Queen took Lord Joy as her consort and the people rejoiced

Never had they seen the Queen looked so contented and lovely

This was because Lord Joy had melted the Queen of Ice

With his masculinity had satisfied her in every way

They lived happily ever after...because the Queen got l________

Finish the FAIRY TALE YOURSELF!!!!!

"One poem per person, any length is acceptable, and old or new poems you create are welcome. All the best, and I'm looking forward to any entries!".

The instructions did clearly state that it was only one per person. And yes it is my first time running a competition, I thought that I would give it a try. I am sorry that you have to delete one, but I think one per person should be sufficient.

Nightshade Belladonna

when the lacy veil covered this gossamer landscape
cloaked within orchids, sullen in their deepening black
i felt the coolness of crushed velvet
trapped in the darkest shadows of my arms.

i hear a faint call, tickling the tendrils of my mind,
the windless tune of the belladonna symphony
playing in the darkened night engulfed within this fevered
nightshade the sorrowful song of the nightingale.

raising my glass, a goblet of the silkiest silver,
full of the fairies enchanted dew.
i taste the bitterness mingling with the
sweet taste of their darkest star falling tears.

enchantment rides upon the sighing breeze
as the time and years pass us by,
but the call of the nightshade belladonna
will always remain uniquely the same.

Traps

It grew light,
the path was beckoning
and I felt an invisible hand grip my own.

Softly in my ear
a childlike voice began its whisper:
"Hurry, come now..."

The moon had lingered on in the morning sky
poking fun at the sun with its fullness
waiting until the carpet of mist was rolled up
from the forest floor
before it faded and slipped silently away.

The voice again.
At first the words seemed barely discernible
almost a jumbled foreign tongue
but I felt the grip on my hand tighten,
tiny urgent fingers insistent
with the strength and determination of time itself
and I was bound to follow.

There in a clearing
dappled sunlight spearing the hazel and birch
the unicorn lay panting,
desperate fury flashing from silver eyes
drowning in the sea of its own helplessness,
caught by the iron trap men had fashioned
from fire and hatred.

As I worked to prise open the cold metal jaws
I felt this proud animal's pity for my kind
penetrate my soul with the weight of ages
asking me:

"Has it always been so?"

Then one shake of the head,
a flash of white
and freedom.

And as I stood there alone
I understood that men
could never be free.
We were caught forever
by the traps we had made
for ourselves.

Hyperions Curse

Cupid must've been misbehaving
Playing with Aella in Acantha's garden
stolen an arrow from Artemis
carelessly shot
it flew through us
for a while we feasted with Dionysis
drinking his wine, oblivious
Until Hera appeared, changing the terms
I sought out Hermes, no coincidence
We, together begged Poseidon
that the sea be fair, accomodating
as Hestia looked away in disgust
I sailed with Nyx and Eros
until the Ourea begged us be still
now I stay at the side of Phoebe
pouring the story of sweetness that kills
awaiting the return of Thanatos
as the laughter of Chronos mocks me
and Hemera hides

         Fairytales to Reality

It's a place that exists in the back of your mind. So mystifyingly   beautiful, you would only dream to find.
Where people and dragons are on the same side and witches and warlocks are husband and bride.
With fireworks for sunrise and an amber coloured moon bringing in the   night.
Angelic fairies who dance around the fireflies who shine so bright.
Sea serpents and goblins, mermaids and ghosts. You never have to feel afraid as Merlin is your host.
Maybe that's why all these enchanted animals can live in such peaceful and tranquil surroundings.
Yet enjoy each others company, despite how much their instincts and beliefs are compounding.
This make believe world only deals in compassion and universal harmony.
So there is no reason for these creatures you have conjured to have to ever use their built in armoury.
All the mythical creatures that are there in this place are there to look after you and keep you warm and safe.
Meanwhile in reality , everything's quite the opposite.
Peace and harmony are rarely seen, it's usually the innocent one that cops it.
That could be why sometimes, we all try to escape.
Each one of us should know its hard to hide from fate.
I wonder if that's why alcohol and drugs were invented, so we can all close our eyes and find a spot.
So everyone one with troubles would not have to lose the plot.
What ever the reason for wanting to.....just for a little while close your eyes and disappear.
There's nothing wrong with visiting that place your minds creates, if it means that your somewhere you feel safe, somewhere you never have to fear.
Sometimes it's so much better than the reality of what it's like living here.

Once sighted... The setup was to…cross, cross
For her, he would fan dangle the bridge. That bridge heading for trouble
He was dangling love, cloaking lust. The trouble for which they’d come
Two 2get together for the fun. The love upon which she shouldn’t go
And for that lust… again, the setup was to cross, cross
She would walk from no gain towards an ending with a treacherous loss
Wasn’t as though Slim wasn’t fast. Perhaps she was just a few steps too slow
Regardless, he came forward coming across as Mr. True Blue
Very convincing… the setup to cross, cross

“for sure he thought he knew that she knew
knowing all about these cool crossings
the carnal crazy ones which were soon to be ventured
fun & games baby and no, we won’t be censored”

That’s what he thought. And yeah, she ventured
She had thought she had heard him right
Thought she had saw the light. But no, that was during the day
Now this… this was now the nighttime and
for all his chivalry…For all that it was worth, well,
all that had just faded away
She told him, she had dreamt she would be with him
He told her, “No Slim, that was just a wishful thought
That’s just the buy-in wherein
you got bought”

Now caught…she’s a fan now dangled in fantasy
Him dangling love while cloaking lust
His and others; and those others?
We’ll just call them his Fraternizing Brothers
A Court of Liars with their Circles of Fires..
Pent-up and like him... Setup to cross, cross

Obviously she was one of the naïve… one of those trusting few
He, the poser, not at all one of the True Blue
Absent in him was the High of being humble
But she…she’d be the one to tumble
For he had long ago descended along with his hunger
Him and the others; gone on from their idle boredom
They went sacredly into a forte of wilding out
Plummeting deeper into the depths of pure idolatry
Him and his peers and their Bad Boy chemistry
Sets of something else altogether…
Calling it…a change up in the weather

Thoughts of sunshine?

They now have stormed into a crazy hazy hue
Here & now staging another incident
Another accident
One about to happen…on purpose
The purpose?   The collusion of collision
With his crew of Bad Boys wanting to upload the pile up
'Cause without doubt this “move” was about to bring his style up
She, his new-found acquaintance
She was about to be “that” something new
And it ain’t got nuthin to do with his heart being or not being true
As it was, someone in his crew
They had whispered, “Ross is Boss; let’s just see what it do”

And with that.. The eerie thoughts compounded
The evil surrounded taking its turn to increase its yield
And with the package from his pocket
Its contents were like a rocket
Formulated to drag her into their killing field
Where in the overnight? The burn was to turn into another day
Then that day would roll-on into a week
By then seguing into a fools-on Overture of Weakness
Hot cocks & cold clammy hands
Appendages of so-called friends
The ones posing as fans
Motivated to remain engaged in this
Them saying in unison… “Well let’s just go on and freak wit this…
C’mon homie, you said she wasn’t a Personal so…
There’s NO time here for your meekness”

Peer pressure had morphed in him to go along with his crew’s evil pleasure
A sensory overload by any measure
A vile episode of Beasts getting out-of-hand
Preying upon a weakness
As much
as they
can

This was to be a date rape extraordinaire’
Wherein the “Extra-Outta-Order-Crew”
They just didn’t care
Not thinking
could be their sister
in this type
of affair

Blown minds of a beastly kind
Playing mates of
the Unfair.

The winds carry forth,
The flowers, her own,
A Goddess so wanted,
The beloved Persephone.

Her beauty so radiant, Hades dost see,
Rushing forth with his chariot, grabbing her so accurately,
She ran for her life, in terror she screamed,
Little did she know, she was to be his queen.

But lo and behold, she was brought to hell,
In his domain, was where she would dwell,
To the God of the Underworld, would she become bride,
Meanwhile, in the world above, her garden had died.

And thus began the death of eternal spring,
From their own haven, did animals take wing,
Dear Demeter, hast thou gone too far?
The heroes sigh as they watch from their stars.

When mama found her missing, she cried in grief,
She made the trees shed, and left them not a leaf,
She created winter, in her misery,
Until Zeus managed to release beloved Persephone.

However, Hades had her eat the fruit of the dead,
Which complicated the life that she led.
Four months in darkness, two-thirds above,
After all that had happened, her husband, did she ever love?

Empress of the dead, why art thou enraged?
When Hades enticed Minthe right into his cage?
Jealousy sparks from most but not fear,
Admit it, deep in thine heart, you still hold him dear  :P

Electric Lady Land

Theres a place I go inside my head
When on the inner paths I tread
When my eyelids turn to led
And I sink into my bed
Pulsating pictures point the way
As I drift by purple pelican bay
where fully flavord gum trees sway
and lickable liquorish leeches lay

I dived into a sea of dreams
In a yellow submarine
A thousand miles past Pepperland
I came to a shore of purple sand
Where drifting dreamers in a daze
Were not the slightest bit amazed
to see bicycling butterflies
Gliding past them towards the sky

I wandered through a fractal forest
To the big rock candy mountains
Eventually I came to rest
By a cascading crystal fountain
In its clear and jeweld waters
An angels face reflected there
With a rainbow row of flowers
Placed within her silver hair
But as I turned around
She was nowhere to be found
Somewhere trees were falling down
But they never made a sound

Theres gold at the bottom of the well
where devilish dooly doppers dwell
They spend their spare time racing snails
On the backs of turtle shells

cellophane sorcerers seal seven secrets in pristine prismic pyramids
and place their criptic scriptures on the wall where shiny silver beatles crawl
Electric ladys lounge near a lagoon of liquid light as laughing leprechauns chase speedy sprites
I watched a circus show that featured flying purple people eaters
and alien acrobats turning summersaults and wintersaults
without ever coming to a hault

I sat with Humptey on a bench
And told him "None of this makes sense"
He replied with a sudden burst of laughter
"does it even realy matter?"

I said" maybe not but anyway
I must be off I cannot stay.
I haven't much more time for play
Ill come again some other day."

So I caught a flight with Mr. Kyte
Untill the land was out of sight
I opened my eyes at 6:15
And couldn't quite remember where id been

Selene

Selene, my light!
To bring me joy this night,
As always you do-
Forever as I watch you.
Careful to gaze,
While Helios takes away the day,
Bringing to me,
The loveliest view of you.

Selene, you're high heaven placed,
But a shepherd boy,
Has loved your grace.
The cool nights he always waits-
To look upon the moon.

Sleep well, Endymion.
May the moon be a light,
Through those cool nights,
To guide your dreams-
Every looking at Selene.

Forever he will sleep,
Eyes open for the view.
A faithful watcher, a loving man,
Who fell for the beauty of the moon.
