A reptile in this world
I've lived in this world for far too long,
I've planted a tree, I've made a son.
I was born and raised in the south of Peru.
I've done, what I did, and I still do.
Twenty years ago, my mom laid some eggs,
I had seventy siblings, my name was Rex,
named after the dog, that killed my dad,
so my mom would never forget.
I grew and grew longer as long as I knew,
and now it has come to this, my time is due.
But before I die, I will tell my story,
with all the hate and all the glory.
My mom died young, we were all alone,
not a single trace of sympathy was shown.
People despised us, acknowledged us only as snakes,
they never believed we had, what it takes.
But I did not give up, hope was still there,
so I found a love and she was so dear.
We didn't have much, but were happy with it,
and when I got the chance my fire was lit.
I got promoted, my income did rise,
we build a house and to my surprise
my wife was pregnant, I was so glad,
the day, my children we born, was the best, that I had.
And I worked myself the past years to the bone,
so my kids would not know the life, I had known.
They grew up in happiness, I loved them so much
and suddenly they moved out, they left the hutch.
Now I stand at the top, I have all I need,
the children are away, only two mouths to feed,
we do what we want, holiday all year around,
and when she whispers in my ear, it's the sweetest sound.
We grew old and there had to come that one day,
when she left me and I had no more words to say,
all alone, in bitterness, I cried in my home,
she was the one, the dearest I had ever known.
So I'm living alone in an apartment by myself,
and I'm spending my time, cleaning the bookshelf,
nothing to do, nothing more to gain,
I'm only a reptile in this world, living in vain.

They say slow and steady
Always wins the race
Then why have I not won
The race of life
I am certainly slow
I take my time
It takes me years
To crawl one mile
My children are hungry
My wife always sleeps
My work at the factory
Is far too much for me
They want to take my children
Give them to a happy home
But why would I wish
My beautiful children gone
My neighbor always taunts me
Wants me to race
Says he wants a rematch
But I always tell that hare I wish not to race
Our shells only protect us so much
We can easily be hurt
We do have feelings
We do have needs
We aren't all lazy
We aren't all cowards
We aren't all cute and lovable
We are needed
They say slow and steady
wins the race
Then Why have I not won
The race of life
Always wins the race

Come on in the water’s fine
I’ve had my eye on your
Shoes and socks off
Step right in and cool your toes
You won’t see the ripples on the surface
I’ll come and say hello
I’m very hungry
Dinner’s served
You’ll not be making a handbags out of me
I’ve had my eye on your
Shoes and socks off
Step right in and cool your toes
You won’t see the ripples on the surface
I’ll come and say hello
I’m very hungry
Dinner’s served
You’ll not be making a handbags out of me

Reptile
The dawn was an hour shy when I took up this post
motionless, in all appearances derelict,
defunct as a coal-powered computer.
From the grey east the river mists rose on purple legs
that each bowed back into the water
servants to the sun.
My slack skin grew taut.
The stale puddles on the slate shrank underfoot
as I drank-in a slow strength.
I stole it from the stone
stole it from the light
from my prey
from the pulse of the day itself
until it cupped me in its care
and I lay invisible
locked in the rhythm.
Flit about. Circle. Spend your energy vainly.
Our worlds do intersect.
In a fleet stab of time's ferocity
you become my possession.
Now you see how I was made
and so survived.
I am here before your kind
and long after.
