Untranslatable Words

poet Anonymous

Poetry Contest

Write a poem based on an untranslatable word from the list
There are words from other languages that have no English comparison that provide a fascinating insight into the countries and the cultures themselves.

For this comp, I would like you to choose an untranslatable word from the list below and form your poem around it. I’m looking for insight here. Strong narratives.

.
.
.

Waldeinsamkeit (German)

The word waldeinsamkeit consists of two words joined together. Wald means forest, and einsamkeit means loneliness or solitude.

It hints at both the feeling of being alone in the woods and also at a peaceful oneness with nature.

Iktsuarpok (Inuit)

Describes the feeling of anticipation when you're expecting someone. It refers to the impatient excitement that makes you constantly check to see if they're coming.

It's that feeling that makes you look out the window countless times in hope of seeing your guest arrive.

Goya (Urdu)

Goya is an Urdu word for the moment when fantasy is so realistic that it temporarily becomes reality.

It refers to the total suspension of disbelief you get with good, powerful storytelling.

Mångata (Swedish)

This beautiful word describes the reflection of the moon on water. It refers to the wavy, road-like shape that appears across the water when the moon is shining on it.

It consists of the prefixes Måne meaning moon, and gata meaning street/road. So it is sometimes indirectly translated as "moon-path", "moon-river", or "moon-track".

Saudade (Portuguese)

It is a bittersweet, empty feeling that carries the knowledge that the object of longing may never return.  It is often considered characteristic of the Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese temperament.

It implies melancholy or nostalgia. It has been described as "the love that remains" after someone is gone.

Hiraeth (Welsh)

This Welsh word refers to homesickness mixed with sadness for the lost or departed. It implies a longing for the homeland or the romanticized past.

Ya’aburnee (Arabic)

It represents a mixture of longing, nostalgia, wistfulness and yearning.

The Arabic word ya'aburnee literally means "you bury me". The concept it represents goes far deeper than that (no pun intended).

Ya'aburnee is a way to declare your hope that your loved one will outlive you, as it would be unbearable to live without them.

It expresses the desire to spare yourself the pain of a life without the person you love.

Jijivisha (Hindi)

The Hindi word jijivisha refers to the strong, eternal desire to live and to continue living.

It is usually used to talk about people who absolutely love life.  It suggests intense emotions and the strong desire to live and thrive.

twisted bones/and sick fantasies

it just doesn't feel real
this unsolved gruesomeness
of your infidelities
why would you murder what we had
and just casually toss our memories in the fire
to feed those vicious flames?
why?
why?
metaphorically
you stabbed me in the stomach
but it feels real in such a way
that i sickly imagine the wounds on my body.

Waldeinsamkeit in Tiergarten

I love to sit around in Tiergarten
Alone in the wilderness of this huge parc
Yet surrounded by great chunks of history
But enjoying  the peace and quiet of
Nature
Alone and away from the madness
Be it only for an hour or two.
Better than all the shrinks in the world.

Mångata

she is pulled by the moon
her way traced
like light on water,
her fingers
raking the shore
pulling it deeper
than he can see
even in dreams

and he by the sun
by the hand and the gun
and lays his head on rocks
and makes his bed on nails
and he is born to this
and she to that
and each is only a piece
of a thing
and where, sweet jesus,
is the other piece
of me?

Sovereign I Am

I want to shed my skin
worn and wrinkled by
the toils of life
I long  for answers buried
beneath human ignorance
Openly I bare the soles
of my feet ground me
on fertile soil

I stand humbled as my heart
speaks to the heart
of this ancient forest
Spirit to Spirits within
this realm, surround me
with solitude, sovereign
I am

A Goddess, strong
in knowing my loneliness
 is lost in contradiction
to this oneness, I feel
Peace moistens my reflection
insight, is  touched magnified
I am

the eastern sky magnificent
in colors of the rising sun
warm upon my skin, lit
morning dew transparent
gleaming on centuries old
moss, droplets of wisdom
green as emeralds
guild each step
I am

nothing
I am everything
A silent breath escapes
I am everywhere
"No words are spoken
there are no words to speak
 I am"

The acceptance of what is
rising  over fear falling
as a cowl I am draped
with deep knowledge
Awaken my purpose
It's realness exposed
void of task
It's already been done

In solidarity wiith the earth
sky, water and fire
Is life
Transition, is alive along
this plane of existence
I am, where
I am destined to be
I am,  who
I have always been
sovereign
I am

Floating in such majesty (sonnet)

Elemental whispers those wonders lie untapped
behind the broken clouds
magic waited poised as springs awaiting sap
the lamp that shone, from the ancient path to now

For awe, will champion the faltering heart
the way the lunar spotlight sets
hunger is the dream, followed I without regard
to walk one step beyond, where normality would vet

No easy way to break conventions vain foothold
free the leash and levitate on essences
go, to where those beams, before you lie unscrolled
achieve Nirvana, the innocence of no pretence

To grasp perfections page, written in golden leaf
concepts reflections, the path gilded smooth, so steep

Nicknames

I called him Papichulo
But he really wasn’t the true definition
We just both liked the song
And the way he looked in his Cadillac
Windows rolled down
Cigar rolled up
He called me Goya
Because when we were far apart
He’d think of me and imagine I was there
Next to him
And he swore
I was really there and he could really feel my skin
On his
We decided against the norms
Baby, Honey, Sugarbear
Those just weren’t for us
We needed something significant
Something just for us
I would wait for my Papichulo
He would wish for his Goya
And when we were together
We’d open up the wine
And snuggle deep inside the blankets
And wish for the night to never end

Mr. Wiggles

the milk cartons reminded her-
the child needed a sip of;
and changing more than
made up, for
returning Iktsuarpok to
my husband.

I kept him 9 months, be it hurt
or love, Iktsuarpok and reminder,
I used to be selfish, no time but
his cute face now.

grass and very serious hunt,
he crawls and I Iktsuarpok it;
love hurts so much but the
world
is my child.
