Poetry Contest Description
Internal-Rhyme Trochaic Shape-Poems Showcasing Benefits of Hymenoptera
Hymenoptera is the order of insects, comprising wasps, bees, hornets, sawflies, and ants.
There are over 150,000 living species. Many with unique traits, properties, and abilities that have many potential benefits to humans and ecosystems.
Many species and their roles in nature are not well understood. For this reason, we should probably be mindful about how we regard them, and probably not be so quick to kill them.
The purpose of this contest is to generate awareness about these magnificent yet little appreciated insects. Take your time, research, and discover your favorite hymenoptera, then write an internal-rhyme trochaic shape-poem showcasing your magnificent little monster.
There are no prohibitive rules to this contest, but submissions will be graded by a point system. Points will be earned based on quality and quantity of literary devices. Extra points will be earned for sharing potential benefits of Vespa species, and points will be deducted for sharing already understood benefits of honey producing Apis species. The entry with the most points wins.
Broaden your perspective and enjoy.

VENOMOUS SACRIFICE
Oh bee
that's normally
so sweet,
today you
knocked me off my feet with your distinct message
sent, though I knew not what it meant. Fingers
found you in my hair- didn't know what
you were doing there. Didn't even
know that you were bee;
in that moment you stung me,
warning my heart to no avail.
Found out tonight of love's betrayal!
This poison's effect will linger
direct upon my ringfinger.
Oh bee that's normally
so sweet- today
you knocked
me off my
feet
.

Dearly beeloved,
till-death do we de-
part you through the
part in the hair. 🐝
Honey, it's fair,
bee cause has only
killed you unto me
when you sung your plea
yet stung me right there.
Thanks Kumar!
Awesome share!

Life in the colony
A purpose, that's what nature loves
build a fortress from mud so neatly grouted
a hierarchy that lives and moves
a queen, her subjects band, devoted
Regiments, to tend the hatchery
just a job and wake at dawn
my name and number, A 2923
look snappy, turn the eggs to keep them warm
Just us females, held the fort
the labyrinth for us to spawn
no males for there for our support
after mating were all collapsed, or gone
When need arise, build a bridge. form a raft
nurture the young, till there strong
sister's in one bond, to multitask
combined into a matrix, just to get along
The matriarchal tower how it thrives
work the ethic, each seeks to demonstrate
swarm like bees all buzzing in the hive
"all for one and one for all" commensurate
The three musketeers they had the edge
and showed resolve like an hymenopteran
and each have strength, an unwritten pledge
to an ant's intelligence, respect,
If only humans had that plan!
